708489 2008-09-29 01:44:00 Looking for a simple accounting software preferably free for a very small home-based business. It should be able to take care GST returns and be able to produce a year end report for IRD tax returns.

Is there such a thing around?

708491 2008-09-29 03:07:00 One I use is Cashbook Complete (www.acclaim.co.nz) - the free version does not do GST, but the lite version does.

On the site on the left under the link Features & 5 Questions describes what does what- this program is often on the PC World DVD's that comes with the Mag.

It's not for me. It's for a friend of mine who's an electrician and wishes to keep his own accounts rather than handing everything to an accountant.

708493 2008-09-29 03:50:00 Prepare your own accounts by all means, but a smart small business operator still pays an accountant to prepare the Accounting Reports and tax return -
It can save one hell of a lot of grief from the IRD, do your own exclusively and get audited by the IRD.

Look at MYOB Business Basics - Covers Invoicing - GST returns etc.
It will set you back a whole $199 + GST, and this is a fully tax deductible expense.
You can import bank statements from on line banking - you can export your accounting records direct to your accountant direct to to your accountant.
If one is seriously in business then one shouldbe professional and keep precise up to date records.
As a retired accountant, I can assure you that using a professional for your end of year accounting and tax return will pay off.

I believe the Accountants fee is still tax deductible. I also was a self employed eletrician, many years ago. He did the end-of-year account that went to IRD. Well worth the money it cost. In 5 years I never had a query from IRD. PJ

708497 2008-09-29 10:16:00 I'm with wainuitech - Cashbook Complete - been using it for about five years. Still needs some UI improvement, but for the price (and the fact that it's a Kiwi product), you can't go wrong. And your accountant doesn't have to own a licensed copy of the application to process your accounts!! johcar (6283)

I agree.
I've been using it for a few years now ( electrical contractor), and my son for his business.Tried MYOB and couldn't understand half the words.
