2008-09-28 22:59:00 | Hello, I'm a 1st year uni student. As part of an assignment I'm doing a survey on perceptions of NZ dialects. I've already done part of it in the North Island, but have had problems getting the South Island part done. I need five males who were born and raised in Christchurch, are going to school in Christchurch, are in Year 11, are average to high achievers at school, and associate as being New Zealand European. The survey involves you filling out a questionnaire. It will take less than half an hour, and I am prepared to give you a $10 voucher for your effort. If I'm unable to find enough Year 11s willing to take part I'll also consider people in other years at high school. It'd be most convenient for me to meet you somewhere close to Riccarton or the University of Canterbury, but I'll bus somewhere closer to you if required. If you're interested, please reply to this message or send an email to mwd35@student.canterbury.ac.nz Thank you very much, Mark.

2008-09-28 23:59:00 | I'm not too worried about spam. I've put email addresses online before without obfuscating them. It does result in lots of spam, but that's not a problem when you have a decent spam filter. The reason for being so specific in who can do the survey is so that I can compare two groups of people who are the same in all but one way, and see what the differences are in their responses. I chose to use people at school so that it would be easier to find a group of people meeting all the criteria. And it worked, at least in the North Island where I worked through my old high school. But in the South Island, mainly because of procrastination on my part, I haven't managed to do this through a school. So now I'm instead trying to find enough people who meet these criteria online, and the best way I can see of doing this is posting in the off-topic section of NZ forums I happen to be a member of.

2008-09-29 00:10:00 | Year 11 males? Is that 1911 or 1811? 2011 males are still in liquid form. Did I win? Send the $10.00 to me now.

2008-09-29 00:39:00 | Hmm, I'm 17, and aside from a 3-month stint in England, I've lived here (Chch) all my life. If you run out of 16-yr-olds, I'd be prepared to help. One question, where can the voucher be redeemed? | ubergeek85 (131) | |

2008-09-29 01:38:00 | I haven't got the vouchers yet, so that's negotiable. I was thinking of getting Westfield vouchers, which can be redeemed at most shops in any Westfield mall in the country. If I don't have enough Year 11s by Wednesday night I'll open this up to people slightly younger or older. 17, brought up in Christchurch but for 3 months in England will be fine if I can't find Year 11s who meet the criteria.

2008-09-30 23:40:00 | I've decided to open this up to Year 10s, Year 11s and Year 12s. If you're interested please get in contact with me. | markdarb (7490) | |
2008-10-01 09:09:00 | I've also surveyed a Year 9, so I'm changing it to an age range of 14 to 17. I still need two more people to survey.
