827252 2009-11-05 03:41:00 Hi Guys,

A friend has a XP machine with dial up and when ever he connects to his ISP it starts downloading something (If you click on Status). This can get up to 10 megabytes.
Is there someway to find out what is downloading it just starts as soon as we log on. I thought it may be some Microsoft Updates, but it seems to go on for ever.
Do you think we need to leave it on for a day or so so that it can download these updates or could it be something else ?
We have since disabled Microsoft Updates, but the downloading continues.

Regards

827253 2009-11-05 04:02:00 It would go on forever if its microsoft updates, but if you've disabled it then I doubt it.

Get them to post a hijack log up

827255 2009-11-05 08:26:00 Do you have a 3rd party firewall of any sort? Then you would know what programs are downloading stuff, and could block/unblock certain programs from updating.

827257 2009-11-05 20:14:00 Thanks guys, that tip about the firewall sounds a good one ! Digby (677)
827258 2009-11-05 20:53:00 And a misconfigured firewall may ensure there is no internet at all too. Sweep (90)
827259 2009-11-05 21:48:00 The only way to know is get something which can monitor all the connections made and find out which process is transferring the data

Like zqwerty says, TCPview should work well

It's probably an updater for some program iTunes/Adobe reader/etc etc the list can go on (10MB is not much for updates anymore) OR it could be some kind of virus.

827260 2009-11-06 09:06:00 Are you sure it's actually downloading, it could be something like Limewire sharing/uploading, does he have this or any P2P programs running?
Could also be malware as Agent 24 said.
Get him to do a HijackThis log and post it here.

827261 2009-11-07 02:13:00 It could be any number of programs updating themselves, eg anti-virus, Java, Windows Time sync, internet browser, etc.

A HijackThis log will help determine whether anything sinister is going on.
