827060 2009-11-05 01:30:00 You need a desktop with a SATA connection on it then. To get whatever off it. All you need is a SATA cable and connect the power to a spare molex adapter. Then turn a desktop on, and it should pick up your hdd Speedy Gonzales (78)

Thanks, I'm thinking very seriously about going to DSE or somewhere like that to buy an external HDD enclosure. Gathering then, that one 2.5" one suitable for SATA connection is what I need??

827062 2009-11-05 02:01:00 Yup, I'm pretty sure normal SATA cables (for a desktop) are compatible with smaller SATA hdd's. Just plug in the cables, it should be all go Speedy Gonzales (78)

Awesome. But, the old lappy I'm working on now I don't think is SATA? It's an old doorstop, faithfull yet the same!

Now, I'm thinking - have a Maxtor external HDD here. Should I pull it apart??? to put the 2.5" lappy hdd in. Nope, better not - think I'm getting abit too confident now. Oh and I didn't do a full back up before the lappy bombed with log on fault. Had no room left on the portable hdd.

827064 2009-11-05 05:06:00 Have put HDD into enclosure, and able to see files through the older vers laptop. Feeling relieved. Copied the userinit.exe file from windows, system32 on this lappy to the hdd in the enclosure (same place, windows, system32 etc) now can I hook the external hdd up to the lappy that can't log on and get it to boot from the external hdd? Think I'm confusing myself... Princess (7275)
827065 2009-11-05 08:13:00 I've run into this problem a few times, even once myself and I've found that most of the time even replacing the reqired files doesn't fix it..

You may just want to save youself the hassle and just clean install..

Yes, it will-but you can back those up to an external media first.
