708807 2008-10-01 02:32:00 Yesterday a Telstra salesman came to my door promising cheaper yet faster internet.

He said Telstra offers internet with a constant 10mbytes/s (as in 83mbits/s). I said wouldn't the speed be dependent on the other end? And he said, no, it is a constant 10mb/s, guaranteed.

I asked him "So if my brother in Auckland is sending me a photo at 16kbytes/s, I will receive it at 10mbyte/s?" He said yes, and he guaranteed it. The magic download-data-before-it-is-uploaded plan turned out to be $3 more expensive than what I currently pay + it has a 10gb cap.

708808 2008-10-01 02:48:00 Hey, this all sounds awesome. I was already on their 15GB "Pro" plan and received an email from them today about the 25GB increase. Awesome, but I hope they don't charge us all hundreds of dollars for this, otherwise it will remain Telescum.

Only reason I stayed with them was because my download speed was almost 12,600Kbps with the average upload speed of 640Kbps. I don't upload much anyway, just a downloader. I've also done a bit of internet optimizing but it hasn't changed much.

708809 2008-10-01 03:13:00 Upload speed certainly affects the maximum download speed. My plan is limited to 128k upload max, so that limits the download to about 3.5mbits. utopian201 (6245)

You're quite right.

Gosh, that means my down speed is faster than Telstra Clear's fastest download speed, but the upload is always garbage at 650Kbps.
I'll never test at speedtest.net again, I never get the right results, and it's the only test site that gives me crap results, as I've tried testing at 20 odd ones and all give me a download result of somewhere between 11Mbps-13Mbps. Damn you speedtest.net.

Your upload speed is good, you can't expect anymore than that on a normal ADSL plan .
The A in ADSL stands for Asymmetric . The download speed is always faster than the upload speed .

I think he's getting his bits and bytes mixed up.

I think your right. There's no way its 10 megabytes, that's European speed Broadband in rich parts.
Probably referring to the download 10Mbps/2Mbps. That's the fastest speed available here in New Zealand. I'm getting 12.7Mbps/0.8Mbps and I'm not even cable, but Telecom ADSL2 +, weird. But yeah, speeds like 10MB/s wouldn't arrive here for a decade at least.

708814 2008-10-01 08:54:00 Bring it on. That's great news radium (8645)
708815 2008-10-01 19:36:00 Yes, and also all the new plans except for the old Basic plan are going to be max/max and with Telecom those speeds go quicker than Max/Max speeds from Orcon, Telstra Clear, Xnet, definitely vodafone and Slingshot and others.
Mine for instance was just above 6,500 down when I turned it on to "Pro" and it's basically rised from that to over 7,000Kbps download and for some reason I now have around 12,300Kbps download but with the mediocre upload speed - in the 600Kbps around about that.

A little bit low this morning, but speedtest.net isn't that good anyway:

708816 2008-10-01 19:40:00 There's more to choosing an ISP than their plans you know.
All sorts of reasons:

Customer Service
Consistency
and so on
