708556 2008-10-01 01:51:00 We had several windows done a few years back to cut down on fabric/carpet fading. The amount of light reduced depends on the level of tint. We chose too dark a tint and it's darker than we expected. Go lighter than you think. Other than that, it's been a good buy. Fishb8 (484)
708557 2008-10-01 01:55:00 Remember Pato, if these are sun facing windows you will get no solar gain (heat from the sum)

House next door has tinted glass, and it's very cold. They need the fire going a lot. Don't underestimate sunlight as heating, at 1 kW per sq metre.

Unless the room is too hot now....Never thought of that, thanks for tip.

708560 2008-10-01 06:12:00 Main damage was to the kitchen windows which show a slight "milkyness" under some lighting conditions caused by surface damage due to overenthusiastic cleaning. Other damage is a couple of scratches from the wifes wedding ring when drawing curtains. You can get several grades of tint. the one we choose is not really noticable except you can see the tint when the window is open and you compare the glass and glass free areas. We have not noticed any great loss of heat from the sun, but we had to do something as the sun was so strong it was causing furnishings to fade and the carpet to rot. tutaenui (1724)
708561 2008-10-28 07:48:00 We had some UV tinting film applied to our north facing windows about 15 years ago still in reasonable to good condition apart from a few scratches. No sign of it lifting. You cant use ammonia based window cleaners on it though.
Clean with a soft danp cloth.
Ditto, though only about five years ago. Saves a lot of the damage to the carpet and drapes.

708562 2008-10-28 08:26:00 Has anyone had any experience with Tinting of home windows.? If so is it successful.?

Bought some tinting films from someone on trademe. It comes with the applicator. Easy to use with no air bubbles. Even by son applied it on his windows all by himself. I am not a DIY person and this is the only DIY project I have undertaken. It's almst 3 years now and still in perfect condition. The results is pleasing. Had checked with a contractor for such work. Labour alone is $60/hour. For the whole house, it can cost a few hundreds. Material is slightly than trademe prices.

708564 2008-10-29 03:29:00 Had our entire house done a few years ago professionally, can't remember the cost or who did it, but it's fantastic.

Dark mirror tinting on front windows and lighter on back and sides. All UV, plus tint.

I might have the details if they are really needed.

We had actual tinted glass in our last house and this one without it was a bit bright.
