| 708325 | 2008-09-28 23:22:00 | I don't have operating costs (or kids), but I'm TRYING to start a repair business. What you need to do is look at the costs that come with the business - @ $25 for example you wont have a business. Things that come to mind off the top of my head: Running costs of a vehicle if you do call outs GST Income Tax your time and Skill Level - whats it worth If you do repairs - a place to do them Workshop Internet Access/charges, for updates, downloads etc Power charges Equipment for testing / fixing damaged PC's insurances - if you get burgled or cause damage to a persons PC/Equipment Stock to repair PC's, small stock - HD's RAM Optical drives etc ACC Prob a few more but I cant think of any off the top of my head - Its lunch time --- I need food :drool |

If you charge those sort of prices, your business will go bust in a very short time, just like over 60% of new startup businesses. If you undervalue yourself, everyone will undervalue you. Good luck. |

| 708328 | 2008-09-29 18:59:00 | I'm not registered for GST, and my parents pay for a lot of it. :pHmmmm OK then - Watch out for the Tax man - you willhave to pay Tax if you earn an income and intend on making a living. Questions to think about - What are you going to do when you do a job, and you have to give receipts for work, and people ask for your GST number for their accounting. - you will need accounts (even cash ones) at computer suppliers to get parts, All my suppliers usually they look up the companies records to make sure you are a registered company and not some " wanna Be, getting cheaper parts" - no point in buying them from other shops as by the time you add some profit in the components then start getting to expensive. Saying your parents pay for the lot is fine now - but are you going to live at home,( or where ever you live) or are they going to pay for the running expense for all your time the business is run by yourself. Advice - take it or leave it - up to you.:) I dont mean any disrespect or wish to dampen any prospects but by the comments its obvious the full picture has not been looked into and whats involved in running your own business as a full time job. If you were doing repairs as a hobby, or to get a few extra $$ then fine. BUT as a full time job if you dont look at the things you need to do then sooner or later ( meaning the IRD) will catch up with you and then it will cost you big time in unpaid taxes. I personally know of one person who tried to do it so she didn't have to pay gst , be registered - her business is now gone after 2 1/2 years and she owes thousands in unpaid taxes. From what I gather all it took was one person she did some work for ask the wrong question at IRD and then they contacted her - and as they say , the rests history. |

To claim GST the person claiming needs to be GST registered, not the person they got the work done from. They can claim it even if the tradesman is not GST registered. Suppliers want references I've found, they don't care if you are a Ltd company, a partnership or a sole Trader, you just have to be legit. I dunno about "repairs as a hobby", too many cowboys operating in that manner now. So it should be done properly or not at all. |

| 708331 | 2008-09-29 20:36:00 | IMO, $130 for basic Desktop Service\install is rather steep, IIRC, Gen-I are $95 and $125 for Server Engineer, and more again for Network Engineer.... I have to say, I get a little embarrassed sometimes when I have to advise clients of my charge out rate..... |

True , May as well be registered, and claim back what you can - IRD gets to much now. Last one is oh so true. I have to say, I get a little embarrassed sometimes when I have to advise clients of my charge out rate..... Why Sol ? you done the work, got the quals and have the knowledge. I heard someting or read someplace the other day - cant remember now, but some IT people are usually looked upon as " not so important" in the jobs they do - most people dont complain about cost if a Plumber comes to their house, sticks his/her arm down the Loo, pulls out the obstruction :yuck: then charges the person $100+ for 5 minutes work. |

That's so true. I think a lot of people have unrealistic expectations of IT people. We are somehow not worth as much as, for example, a plumber or electrician, but when the PC isn't starting, it needs to be fixed NOW. And when it can't be fixed today, or it's going to cost $150, they kick up a stink about it. Don't quite understand people sometimes. A common one here, often we can't get it sorted the same day, often 2 or sometimes 3 days. Most people are fine, that's what you'd expect. But some people seem to have the idea we will drop everything to look at their baby, cause its more important than the 15 other jobs being worked on. If you car breaks down, you don't expect the mechanic to drop everything and fix it on the spot, or the same day. It's strange! :p |
