What would it be counted as?

If I were not to vote then this is what I would do. Therefore exercising my right to vote for no-one.

People make laws that try to influence the behavior of people.
This does not always work.

There is a law against murder for example and if you are caught and convicted of said crime you will end up in prison without the right to vote. Depending on what was done you will lose the right to visit the USA for example.

Of course the fact that you may be in prison also implies loss of freedom and the right to go where you like when you like.

No way! You're kidding, right? Ok I'll laugh.

ps - Oh I am so scared at the thought that I may not be able to visit the USA.

707992 2008-09-26 21:30:00 I always remember my father used to say "If I don't vote, then I can trash whoever gets in". I later found that view to be the same view of the fencesitting mediocre; those who just can't be bothered doing something, but quite happy to ***** and complain about the results

If you don't get out there and make a change, ultimately whose fault is it if change hasn't been made? People these days find it easier to blame someone else than they do to look in the mirror and see the true culprit

707993 2008-09-26 23:22:00 A non vote is, in fact, a vote.

If you vote for one of the minor parties it has the same effect as a non vote. Any vote not cast for the government (a minor party) is a vote for the opposition. Not voting is also not voting for the government and any vote or non vote takes away a government vote which is a vote for the opposition.

So don't think that not voting will not make a difference. It may not matter to you - and it seems that some do not care what happens to them but you can be certain that these same people will still complain - but it certainly matters to many people, some of them most possibly your family and friends.

Get off your lazy backsides and vote.

As Nofam says, it should be illegal not to vote.

Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.

707994 2008-09-26 23:39:00 There was a statistic a number of years ago which showed that while Australia has a law mandating that all eligible voters MUST vote (or face some sort of fine), voter turnout in NZ for general elections is still higher.

On another note, this guy here has a fairly interesting argument on why some people shouldn't vote: teenagepundit.blogspot.com

This guy is a perfect example:
"Indian immigrant B. Mohan said his support for Labour stemmed from the party's "number-one welfare policies" which had helped him to "survive five years of unemployment".

"The National Party and its millionaire leader, John Key, will never be able to understand the poor, and we cannot trust the rich politicians who listen to consultants rather than their hearts," said Mr Mohan, who has been without a job since moving to New Zealand in 2003."
