2009-11-03 22:20:00 | Hi Guys, A friend has a laptop that is VERY slow. Its a Toshiba Satellite with Vista SP2. It has a intel Core duo 1.86 ghz cpu with 512mg of Ram. They say it was not too bad when they bought it, but now it is deadly slow, it takes 5 minutes to boot up and shut down. I am posting a Hi Jack this log. Can you make any suggestions ? (Aside from buying more Ram or a new machine !) | 826948 | 2009-11-03 22:54:00 | To be honest, it will never run that well with 512MB... 2GB is a better amount. (But you already know that) Disable Aero, the Sidebar and any services they won't need. Use Autoruns technet.microsoft.com to disable unneeded startup items. You probably know all that as well!!

You probably know all that as well!! +1, start up programs are the killer. I suggest cutting down on appearance to aid in performance. Why you have Vista on 512, I don't understand. However, if you want max speed I highly recommend right clicking My Computer>Properties>Advanced System Settings>Advanced Tab>Click Performance>Adjust Accordingly. This can make a fair difference. Also, double check your current Wallpaper. I found a person's laptop I was working on had an image of 12mb... NAY NAY. Half it, do whatever you have to, make it a JPEG, just cut it down to kbs. It's amazing simple stuff like that really affects the performance of computers. Anyway, just a few tips there. Good luck. |

2009-11-04 03:22:00 | You really can't do a lot to make it better. No PC or laptop should EVER have come out of the factory with 512MB RAM and Vista, it's suicide material. 1GB is an absolute minimum, 2GB or more is recommended. Tell him this. DDR2 RAM is cheap - you should be able to get 1GB for around $65, 2GB for around $80. ascent.co.nz ascent.co.nz

2009-11-05 22:15:00 | Thanks guys for the help. I just wish to clarify something I did not buy this computer. It belongs to my landlord and I offered to help them speed it up. They bought it from a major retailer ! They are the ones that should be shot for selling Vista on Laptops with 512 meg. But we all know that. I will try to get them to upgrade it 2 gig. But they have a 5 year extended warranty which may mean that I cannot do it with out voiding their warranty.

2009-11-05 22:56:00 | i'd take it back to the shop and see if they will upgrade the ram as its not performing as it should. when was it purchased?
