| 711081 | 2008-10-09 19:45:00 | A380. I would dearly love to see one in the 'flesh'. :) Can't see one coming to Nelson any time soon, it would overshoot the runway by about 2km and end up in the Best Island sewerage ponds. :D I worked out some stats on it a little while ago, it costs around $450,000 NZD to fill one up with fuel, and the 'economy', or lack thereof, is around 2066L/100km! So if they were to have around 500 passengers on a trip from Auckland to New York, the fuel cost per passenger is $900! www.stuff.co.nz |

| 711083 | 2008-10-09 20:26:00 | It's going to fly around over Auckland for an hour and a half...? :illogical :illogical How selfish. In that time it could do 10 minutes up there, cruise down to Welly for another 10 min flyover then nip down to ChCh for the same, flying over other main provincial towns for a wave before winging back to where it came from. I don't see why Auckland should have it all to themselves. :ban |

| 711085 | 2008-10-09 20:36:00 | Runway size . I didn't say it had to land, just fly over . Instead of wasting fuel flying over Auckland for an hour and a half it can fly over the rest of the country as well . The jumbo jet did that when it first came to NZ apparently . The whole country got to see it flying low over all the major cities . |

I remember reading somewhere that 1/3 or more of any airlines expenditure is on fuel - and that about 1/2 of that is used up on takeoff and climb to altitude. Pilots get big bonuses for saving fuel apparently. Getting into the right jetstreams and throttling back saves their employers a lot of money. |
