710946 2008-10-09 01:37:00 Ordered an ASUS X56A laptop for a guy who absolutely wanted the XP downgrade option it has. Took some time deciding on this one for various reasons.

Fine, except while it came with the O/S downgrade it didn't have the XP driver CD.

After much phoning both Asus (Techmaster) Support and various techs and product managers, I have been informed that because it is so new they haven't actually got drivers for it yet and I have to wait a month (ish) for the CD to be done and sent out.

This is also the time frame for the drivers to appear on ASUS website, at the moment the model doesn't appear there at all.

710947 2008-10-09 01:55:00 ... Good grief.

Unfortunately it's not just Asus. HP's "contact us" page asks you to select your computer first with no option for their Mini-Note.

Yea I was going to mention that. I read that somewhere too the other day.
Hopefully most people will be able to skip Vista altogether as Windows 7 is not too far away.

710952 2008-10-09 04:49:00 Vista is horrible... I just slipstreamed SP1 with Vlite and I was testing it out... and at the same time I had 99% completed downloading a 2.2GB file (which took about 4 hrs) and suddenly BAM! it's crashed with "file access error"

Turns out this is specific to running DownThemAll on Vista.... :badpc: :badpc: :badpc:

Expressing how I feel right now would probably get me banned from PF1 for life...

You probably needed to load the hard drive controller drivers

710955 2008-10-09 10:17:00 Probably.

Or just kick it under the desk, resting my feets on it right now.

Though I'd imagine HP made no such drivers.
