710062 2008-10-06 06:48:00 Here in ChCh the Southern Opera Co is putting on Verdi's Il Trovatore. We're not fans of opera (except Mozart), but we thought we should go to support it. We were not terribly committed so we got the cheapest seats up in the gods of the renovated Lady Isaac Royal Theatre.

Well, what an experience! Even miles away from the stage, we heard every word that was sung clearly over the orchestra. Compare that with the weak voices of singers in modern productions where they need microphones.

The story is magic! We looked it up on wikipedia before we went so that we had some idea (it's in Italian), but there were surtitles, so we were easily able to keep track. This is no mamby pamby story where everybody lives happily ever after. By the end, just about all the main characters are dead (suicide or murder) and the closing line is "Vengeance is mine!"

Well worth a night out if you're in ChCh.

Thank you.
Sadly, I can't get to Christchurch for this performance.
But I will dig out my CD & remind myself of the wonder of pure vocal music.
