To be fair, there's a difference between going backwards and keeping what you have. If you're happy with Office 97 and it does everything you need then there's no reason to spend money on a newer version.

710978 2008-10-13 00:23:00 If they were to release a fully 64 bit version that doesn't support legacy hard and software, one way to get around the inconvenience would be to release a legacy VM.

So you have Windows 7 for your day to day stuff, but can boot a legacy support OS in a window for your older stuff. Like compatibility mode, but not a POS.
