710712 2008-10-09 07:06:00 So all you people who like the no tax idea, would be quite happy to pay the full price for medical treatment, schooling, build and maintain your own roads and so on?

You think we have a high tax rate, go look at Denmark.

Yes, we are highly taxed like Denmark, but Denmark has better services for everything you list above....

710715 2008-10-10 03:25:00 I have always thought that they should talk about the median wage rather than the average wage.

Years ago the average wage was made high because of people like wharfies who earned far more than most workers.

I would have thought that the median wage would be around $ 31,000.

I'm not the smartest cookie in the jar, but wouldn't the median wage be higher then the average wage?

710716 2008-10-10 03:58:00 being a teacher you can only work the hours a school or centre is open...... you cant just work more and expect the kids to be there? you dont get paid for hours of work with no one to be in charge of....:p

My dad is a teacher. While he has long breaks in between term breaks + several weeks over christmas/new year, he spends a lot of time preparing and marking work. So I think it all evens out.

It could be, it depends on the numbers.eg
10 40 40 -> mean is 30, median is 40
10 10 40 -> mean is 20, median is 10

Means take into account all figures, so your 'average' wage is influenced by the bank executives who make almost a billion a year (yes, pushing the bounds of decency like this make the credit crisis worse because they ahve their millions while people have to lose their houses), while the median is truly a more 'middle' number; that is, it isn't influenced by extreme values.

mean and median would be the same if you had a true bell curve.

I always thought average was total divided by how many, and median was the middle between top and bottom

Lets follow Zqwert . . . and . . . . . . . . . . get more of this . . . . . .

New Zealanders have become desensitised to the prescriptive, Stalinist rules promoted by the Nanny State that rules our lives . There was barely a ripple recently when tuck shops around the country started closing as schools gave up trying to comply with the new National Administrative Guidelines (yes appropriately, ”nags” for short) governing the types of food they were able to offer .

But the latest offering from Nanny State really takes some beating: they have decided to clamp down firmly on cleanliness and personal hygiene . From next year new regulations will prescribe the amount of water that can flow through our showers – dramatically slashing the shower pressure that may currently be enjoyed in the average home . We can only imagine what activities are next for the Nanny State’s regulatory focus .
