710050 2009-02-17 04:28:00 . Make sure your wood is dry. Get your wood the year before you need it. Keep it in a shed if possible. Many years ago I use to work in a firewood yard.
:)

Thanks for passing that on,would never have thought of letting it dry in a shed.

Wish I had worked in a firewood yard, then I could pass it on.

710054 2009-02-19 00:09:00 A 100 yrs ago when in my late 30s!!
I would hook up the traler to the car, load up the chainsaw & all tyhe bits. Put a dozen large Lion Beers in the boot & go looking.
Around the country roads. When I spotted a fallen Macrocarpa tree I would go to the farm & ask if I could havit. The answer was mostly, 'Yes but leave the site tidy'. Wherupon I would handover the booze. This tree was cut into rings & stored at home, for next year. Slowly thro' the summer & would split the rings & stack under cover.
Believe it or not I enjoyed doing this to keep my family warm during the winter. Try it!! PJ

710058 2009-03-02 22:38:00 Sorry for the late reply, but I just found my receipts for last year.

City Firewood, ChCh prices for dry firewood per cubic metre:

Aug 08 - Kiln dried pine = $68
Aug 08 - Kiln dried bluegum = $110
Dec 08 - Macrocarpa = $90
All were 10 - 12 inch blocks.

The macro price was for the coming winter; the other two prices were for a top up when I ran short last winter. Prices may have gone up since then - I doubt they would have gone down.

I find pine a waste of space except to get the fire going so you can burn bluegum; macrocarpa is my favourite for heat, length of burning time (cf pine), and ease of splitting into smaller pieces/kindling (cf gum). Bluegum is the hottest commonly available wood, and it burns brilliantly once you get it going, but you need something else that you can cut into smaller pieces to get the fire going properly. Old man gum is amazing, but totally impossible for splitting, and SWMBO objects to carrying the heavy blocks inside from the stack...

Neil, that is an appalling price - in ChCh that would have cost you $136 for kiln dried pine. Maybe you made an error in the amount you got? If not, I would look for another supplier...
