710690 2008-10-08 05:15:00 35 hours isn't a full time job. You will find that many people easily do 50 hours a week plus. I however don't know if the average wage is taken from a 40 hour week, or doesn't take into consideration the number of hours worked. robbyp (2751)
710691 2008-10-08 05:28:00 Um im not sure where full time has to be 40 + hrs. a friends hubby does 70hrs a week, and they think that is normal????

being a teacher you can only work the hours a school or centre is open...... you cant just work more and expect the kids to be there? you dont get paid for hours of work with no one to be in charge of....:p

is it not better to be working no matter how many hours? rather than being stuck on a benefit?

710692 2008-10-08 05:51:00 I think we will find that GST will be increased, perhaps to 15%. There is no mention of it, but I am sure it is being looked at.

I personally don't have a problem with an increase in the tax on spending (GST), so long as there is a corresponding decrease in the tax on earning (PAYE), so I can choose to spend more (or less) of what I earn.

It's my money, and I am capable of making my own decisions on what I spend it on, as I imagine 99% of the rest of New Zealand are.

710693 2008-10-08 05:53:00 Actually, having thought about it, maybe 99% is a tad on the high side - there are still some people out there who support Winston!!! I think maybe their mums still dress them each morning. :) johcar (6283)
710694 2008-10-08 06:15:00 Most weeks, my wage feels pretty damn average. R2x1 (4628)
710695 2008-10-08 06:48:00 Seems like wage rates & salaries vary greatly depending on where you live - I mean, they always have, but lately and particularly in the IT industry, there's huge regional variation . I'm quite certain that if I moved to Wellington I could earn 80% more than what I'm on here in Dunedin (beyond Nationals so-called average) . But of course houses are nice and cheap here still, relative to the North Island .

My thoughts are with young families in Auckland that want to get ahead - God knows how most can afford a house in a reasonable area . . . . . :waughh:

710696 2008-10-08 06:51:00 Well Nelson has sunshine wages so I don't know how any young people can afford to buy a house here, I have a trade that in Wellington, Auckland, Queenstown, Wanaka would pay me higher than the average but I choose to live here so unfortunately I get paid less and I'm under the average here gary67 (56)
710697 2008-10-08 08:35:00 national will be far worse than Labour, the nats are for business men/women, not ordinary people. They are wolves in sheep's clothing at the moment, the monster comes out after/if they get voted in.

710698 2008-10-08 16:24:00 I have always thought that they should talk about the median wage rather than the average wage.

Years ago the average wage was made high because of people like wharfies who earned far more than most workers.

I would have thought that the median wage would be around $ 31,000.

710699 2008-10-08 16:33:00 Don't forget that we would not be getting ANY tax cuts unless National had promised them a year ago.

It was only then the Cullen had to bring in Labour's tax cuts.
