2008-10-07 09:07:00 | Just to be different, I think local taxing is a great idea. Why should someone like pctek pay for Auckland's traffic problems? I can't see Gore needing a huge amount spent on it's roads in the near future, if people want to live away from where the big wages and opportunities are, why should they pay Auckland's road tax? I'm more than happy to pay fuel tax, but not very much so when 90% of it ends up going to Auckland. I'd like to pay for Tasman District roads to be improved, not for extra lanes to be added to Auckland's motorways, which I might user once every 5 years. :2cents: As I've said in another thread today: "Taxes are not levied for the benefit of the taxed" - (Robert A. Heinlein) This is true of ANY tax. It is foolish in the extreme to expect otherwise. Unfortunately.

2008-10-07 16:32:00 | I'm all for Auckland paying for their own roads :clap Whether taxing them via the pump is a good idea I'm not so sure. Tolling would only make the congestion worse. Rates hike would not get all users

2008-10-07 17:35:00 | I dont see why I should pay for roads in north harbour, city and east auckland. I live in West auckland. They should toll the new roads but provide a rat run around them

2008-10-07 20:13:00 | But it costs more to go the long way, so with petrol tax as well they still get their $$$. :p | pcuser42 (130) | |
2008-10-07 21:02:00 | Maybe then you would like to pay the true cost of fuel in your region rather than the citues like Auckland subsidizing it,..?? Dude you have to be joking You should try buying fuel in Haast, Collingwood, Mt Cook and I dare say Kaitaia The price differential is huge. Believe me , the cities do "not" subsidise the cost of fuel for the smaller centers. As a frequent visiter to Auckland over the last 25 years, it is very easy to see that little has been spend on infrastructure (roads, power water) and now is the time for catchup. It is no difference from a householder who does no maintainence on their home, but then has to play catch-up It is catch-up time for Auckland!!
