710031 2008-10-06 09:03:00 Depends on what kind of wood you're talking about firstly - split Pine here in Dunedin goes for around $55 m3 while Manuka and Larch can be around $90 - $100 m3.

I find an Oregon/Pine mix is the best for logburners - Pine on it's own burns out too quickly, but is good to get things going.

I'm ashamed of you, Nigel!

So much for Southern Man...

Of course the price depends on the type of wood - some burn hotter/slower & cost more - plus how far away it has to come from.

Obviously that varies widely around the country.

So the only worthwhile advice for you comes from Southland.
Ask your neighbours, who've been doing this stuff longer than your experimenting.
They'll have probably worked it out.

710032 2008-10-06 09:21:00 Every industrial estate around here gives away free pallets and there's huge demand in winter, but they can't get rid of them in summer. We get all the free firewood we need, and although most are softwood, there are always enough hardwood pallets to provide the slow burning stuff to last the winter. An electric chainsaw is best and quietest for cutting up, though I do use an old skilsaw as well.

Only problem is the nails, but a strong ferrite speaker magnet inside a couple of heavy plastic bags collects them without any trouble, just let the fire go cold first! We chuck them in a bucket then put them in the recycle. It is untreated wood so the ashes can go in the garden.

Total cost? A few bucks for petrol and maybe a trailer hire if there is a really good load waiting.

Cheers

710033 2008-10-06 17:27:00 It's about $120 for pine,up to $160 for macro and higher for gum or Kanuka here.Or $40-55 for a bin of fruitwood.
My cost is about $600 a year for firewood.Using a Gillies Condor which was made down your way.(Omaru I think).
Just scraped through with 3 metres this year.
(Hawkes Bay).I'm sure if I went out and cut it myself it wood be cheaper, but we both work elsewhere!

710034 2008-10-06 17:34:00 I don't know about Gilles Condor,but I can't catch mine to set fire to it! Cicero (40)
710035 2008-10-06 18:39:00 Try Gilles old Phoenix, one flash and it's outa the ash.

Do not try cutting down, cutting up, carting home, splitting and stacking a couple of tonnes of willow. It burns with a cheery flame you can hold your hand in. The only warmth you get is while cutting etc. A former neighbour and I made laughing stocks of ourselves this way, but we did tidy up a messy paddock. ;)

OMG!
When we left Auckland it was around $100 - $130 depending on the type. $130 for Titree.

In Southland its $45 for pine, usually Old Man Pine.
$55 for Macrocarpa and others.

We currently have free trees to cut. We also got some rimu from the demolition guy, he'd take the good stuff to sell and we'd get the borer ridden stuff for firewood.
Pain to cut up though, its all either framing or floorboards. Burns well though!

710038 2008-10-06 19:35:00 , I am currently paying about $80 a metre

You are paying too much. Where are you looking?!!!! I see ads all the time for cheaper wood than that.

710039 2008-10-07 03:07:00 Parklands $80 for Oregon but I can't seem to find much cheaper than that, and as I don't have a trailer I need to pay for delivery on top of that. Morgenmuffel (187)
