712255 2008-10-14 21:31:00 Finally, they have some proper information about the new cellphone network. And no, it's not generation 2 GSM, as we initially thought it was going to be, it is WCDMA. (Wideband CDMA, genration 3 GSM)

There are positives and negatives about this, probably more positive than negative though, apart from the whole expensive phones thing....

I think we'd be the 2nd country in the world to get a proper WCDMA network, behind Japan.

So it is indeed true that we will need dual mode phones for global roaming.

A fully backwards compatible WCDMA handset will need 4 individual modes of operation:
1. Wide band CDMA
2. EDGE - enhanced multi connection packet switched TDMA
3. GPRS - multi connection packet switched TDMA
4. GSM - circuit switched TDMA

712258 2008-10-14 22:12:00 Yeah my Telecom contact told me that a while back (thought I posted it on here?)

Also found yesterday out from a Chorus tech that all the traffic from Telecom Go Large accounts is routed into one PVC throughout New Zealand. So if there's a lot of Go Large user logged on at the same time, things can get pretty slow. Also found out that Go Large isn't going to be ADSL2 enabled.

Apologies if this is all common knowledge!! :nerd:

???? I'm on Go Large with 10Mb/s downstream line speed.

I guess what you mean is that the band-width available for Go Large is so small, that your local line speed could blazing and you are still WAITING.

This is true, but there is a difference between CDMA and WCDMA....
