712057 2008-10-14 00:30:00 . . . since the last time I reported that California is under flames . . . . . . . .

We have some masive fires running loose here . . . most have NO containment . . . most are getting hit with 65+ MPH (105 KMPH) winds . . although the heat isn't very high at this time of the year . (80ºF/27ºC) . Humidity is about 2-5% right now . . . and there's LOTS of combustible material on the ground .

Fires in:

Yosemite (The Sierras - ongoing for a couple of months now . . . . no figures yet) )
Santa Paula (30 acres - 75% contained - no cause listed)
Porter Ranch/Topanga Canyon (2000 acres+, no containment, 1 death and lots of homes and buildings - probable arson)
Merrick Fire (5,500+ acres burned, no containment - probably arson)
Laguna Beach (300+ acres, 40% contained - probable arson)
Camp Pendleton (US Marine Corps)
Corona delMar (just started, no figures available yet)
Tustin (fire is 60% contained - probable arson)
Newport Beach (50+ acres - 60% controlled - probable arson)

Right now we in Hemet/San Jacinto are safe from any flames . . . not like last year . . . but we can get fires closer again this time as there's lots of fuel here from a good growing season and no recent water/rain .

712058 2008-10-14 00:42:00 I've heard that a lot of the forest fires are started by out of work casual firefighters... Thebananamonkey (7741)
712059 2008-10-14 03:05:00 Was a bit about them on our TV the other night. Said they might of been deliberately started.

I'd say: "some" . . . but not all . They pop an occasional pyro- once in a while . But these are all set at the same time so it's kinda deliberate they think .

Most smokers and fire people are prisoners and they don't want to actually work . . . so it's not likely they are doing any of it . If it's a firefighter setting a fire then it's prolly a privateer who's on contract with the state or Federal gvt .

Nicely compiled story . . just missing a "today" update:

The winds are dying a little but the temps are rising and expected to get near to 100ºF (human body temp, or about) for the next few days .

I have 6% humidity today too here where I live, but the areas nearer the ocean are a little higher . The Santa Ana/Santanna (I prefer the latter name, it's more accurate) winds blow from our ENE or so and go out over the ocean driving the atmospheric moisture toward youse guys . . . so we get static electricity and no cooling moisture to help fight the fires .

Strange to say . . . we have two seasons here .

The Fire Season . . when things that grew and died now burn
The Rainy Season . . . when things that burned slide off the hills

Or maybe:

The Hot/Dry Season
The Dry/Hot Season
