829178 2009-11-11 22:23:00 I have a friend who wants to go onto an ADSL2 connection. He asked me if he needs a certain modem type for this.

I have a new unsused Dynalink ADSL modem which I could give him. Will it work?

Thanks.

829179 2009-11-11 22:24:00 Most probably, what's the model number? wratterus (105)
829180 2009-11-11 22:34:00 It will work as an ADSL modem but not as an ADSL2 modem which you need a ADSL2 modem for.
:)

829181 2009-11-11 22:35:00 Most probably, what's the model number?Dunno. It's still in the courier bag it was sent in from Telstraclear. (I kept it unopened in case I cancelled my contract with them so I could prove it was unused).

Anyway, I'd guess it's an RTA1320 which is what I got from them when I set up an adsl account with them on another line last year.

That is ADSL2. Though from what I've read, it runs hot. So have some air flowing around it.

829183 2009-11-12 00:26:00 Thanks Bob. After your reply I removed the unit from the courier bag, and yes, it is adsl, adsl2 and adsl2+ complient. So it'll save my friend a 100 bucks.

Cheers.

PS - Incidentally, I've been using the same model for over a year and never noticed it being too warm, even when its been switchen on for days at a time.

Yes, very much so, constant crashing with just a trickling of traffic through it. I've binned around a dozen of them over the last two years, and have two sitting boxed and un-opened at home. Wouldn't touch them.

It'll cost, but the NB6Plus4Wn is a *nice* router that doesn't fall over, doesn't run hot, has more features than you can shake a stick at, and is price-competitive with even all the el-cheapo models out there! :D

Don't get too dramatic, they get quite warm but would not say they are hot.
There are thousands of people using the RTA1320 without any problems, I have had one for several years and it has never crashed.

Cheers we have had no end of trouble since we got our "New" modem RTA1320, it gets almost too hot to touch, and drops connection after about 10 minutes, then reboot it and it goes fine, absolute pain.

We suspected it was the modem but weren't sure as when we switched plans Telecom stuffed the connection at the exchange and we had a few weeks without internet, Orcon sent us a new modem as they were convinced it was our modem that was faulty, it wasn't till they sent the technician to the exchange for the second or third time that we got internet, but it was always dodgy so we assumed it was a bad line.

But come to think of it, if it was a bad line I should still be able to ping the router when the net connection goes down shouldn't I?

829187 2009-11-12 08:02:00 It looks as though it maybe the luck of the draw. I bought a new RTA1320, ex-TelstraClear via TradeMe a while ago. It's on 24/7 and is just warm to the touch, never been any disconnections or problems.

I'd say it runs just a bit warmer than the RTA220 did that I'm keeping as a spare.
