| 712314 | 2008-10-15 07:08:00 | At the start of the equation... -(3^2) = -9 so that would give a total answer of 16 (-3)^2 = 9 so that would give a total answer of 34 But because of the small gap between the -3 and the other minuses, and that fact that you don't start an equation by using a subtraction sign means the answer is 34. Come on, that is quite faulty reasoning, why do you think that the second -3 term is written as -(-3)² with brackets ? It is not an equation, it is an arithmetic expression. This problem should be simple mental arithmetic for a 13 year old, I don't know what the educational system is coming to:clap |

Prior to the sixth form (year 12?) the branches of maths taught were called arithmetic, geometry and trigonometry edit: and algebra :rolleyes: |

I knew all them sums had names for what we should have did, actually we should have been quite good at sums 'cause we didn't have to spend all our time chasing NCEA tissues. Sadly, it is no wonder we growed up bitter and twisted because half of us failed the school certificate exams. Some managed to fail multi-times, thus qualifying for high public office. (Subject to being able to fall off a log.) |
