| 711491 | 2008-10-11 09:01:00 | The Dominion just found out today that wireless can be insecure and many people don't secure it. They advised to hide your SSID - which is a fat lot of use. No mention of WPA encyption and I doubt anyone following their suggested security advice is any better off this evening. But the Police spokesmen obviously thinks there are hundreds of people racing around downloading child porn on insecure wireless connections - yeah right. |

Those who don't and buy a wifi router are pretty stupid! I went wardriving once and was pleasantly surprised at the percentage of secured wireless connections (about 90%) |

On sites like Trademe. And here they say WPA and WPA2 are no longer secure (www.scmagazineuk.com) They also say using a MAC filter doesnt help as it can be spoofed, and hiding your SSID doesnt do much either I came across a few wireless networks here the other day. Even tho the person may hide their SSID, it doesnt mean you cant connect to it, if it isnt secure. Out of say 10, I saw the other day, most were secure / encrypted, about 4 werent |

Well you can't actually hide your router by "hiding" your SSID as it is easily discoverable by the hackers, it therefore provides a false sense of security and is quite likely to degrade the performance of your network. WPA encryption with a strong password is your best defence - hiding your SSID is not recommended, for example see tech.blorge.com |
