829090 2009-11-11 10:38:00 Since my desktop is now well over 5 years old, it's about time to give things a shake around and spring for a new system.... Heavy-duty tasks to include gaming and raw photo editing.

HDD is ok, and just bought a 24" HD screen, so I've got a budget of $1500 left for cpu, mobo, gpu, psu, ram

Here are my thoughts so far, but comments/suggestions are welcome....

CPU: Intel i5/750 [$350]
Mobo: MSI P55-GD65 [$280]
PSU: Corsair TX750W [$230]
RAM: Corsair Dominator DDR3-1600 2x2GB CL8 [$250]

Then PSU options... How does MSI fare in this dept, say vs Gigabyte which has very similar prices?
option 1: MSI Radeon R4890 OC [$330] (what's the verdict on the OC editions??)
option 2: MSI Radeon R4870 [$290]

Any other thoughts?

829091 2009-11-11 19:28:00 Yea looks pretty good, the Mobo does CF and SLi which is nice, but id go with the gigabyte GA-P55-UD4 prob a bit cheaper and has gotten very good reviews.

No contest of the GPU's go for the 4890, factory OC's are modest and NP.

I personally have seen far too many MSI failures and would choose Gigabyte over it any day.

Same with graphics.

But why stick with 4xxx when the 5 series is now out?

829093 2009-11-11 20:27:00 I think the 4 series is faster than the equivalently priced 5 series. utopian201 (6245)
829094 2009-11-11 20:39:00 I did consider the 5 series for the power savings, but as Utopian said, they're slower in reality than the 4's and there doesn't seem to be a major benefit in DirectX 11.

Battleneter, what's NP?

No Problem

829096 2009-11-11 20:52:00 If you're not getting any 5800 cards, or at least not crossfiring 2x 5770s I think it's best to stick with one or two 4890s. 4890s in crossfire equals or very slightly beats a 5870, but of course at the expense of sound, heat and power consumption. qazwsxokmijn (102)
829097 2009-11-11 22:12:00 5800's are in VERY short supply atm and there prices are inflated as a result, although the 5870's are not to bad.

DX11 is worthless for at LEAST a year and the 5770 is like 20-30% slower than the 4890.

id say buy a sub $300 card like the 4890 which will do very nicely, in a year or so by a next gen DX11 card for maybe around the same price and youll prob end up with a better card than a 5870 especially cheaper than forking out like $700 now. Nvidia are saying there next gen will substantially out perform the 5800's, who really knows but we will know early next year.

Id avoid Crossfire or sli myself, heat, power, poor scaling in some games etc,

1x4890 will monster nearly anything 1900x1200 and below (except Crysis lol).

829098 2009-11-11 23:16:00 Alright, so an OC 4890 it is, and I'll have a look at the Gigabyte mobo. Is there a better option for the RAM or PSU (without spending more!), or a slightly less-good option for much less $$ ???

Also, has anyone had good/bad experience with TasTech here in Chch? Their prices are pretty good on some of this gear.

Haven't had any experience with them, but the general consensus for this room (and others, too) is that Computer Lounge is the best and Ascent follows very closely behind. I've found that Computer Lounge is usually fairly competitive on price, too.

You may be able to get a better price from them if you can find a much cheaper product somewhere else. You may not though, after sales support and the knowledge that you're not going to get shafted do come at a (small) price.

I'd say that 750W is overpowered if you're only having one graphics card (which is probably a good idea). Battleneter's suggestion of spending less on graphics now and upgrading in the future makes a lot of sense, too.
