| 713914 | 2008-10-22 21:37:00 | I've recently had some drama on this WinXP Pro machine with some inexplicable issues with Zonealarm. I struggled to uninstall it, but eventually did it. Since then I installed Comodo, and it seems good. So I'm wondering, what's the general opinion of the comparison of these two free software firewall products? |

I might try Comodo IS (which will inc the FW and AV), once its final. Its currently a release candidate I think. I wouldnt say ZA is totally free. You still have to pay for it, to get "other features" I got rid of ZA ages ago, I got sick it shutting one of its services down, all the time. Which stopped you from getting on the net. Dont know if they've fixed it. I haven't used it since I'm not using anything now tho, havent for at least 2 yrs. |

I hate Commodo, its OK if you are experienced but for the new user who has never had a firewall, no. I have installed it for a few users but mostly I'll use Online Armor for the newbies and give them a document about allowing/denying outgoing stuff. Meanwhile until I change O/Ss I'll stick with my ZA Pro V4.0. |

| 713919 | 2008-10-22 23:19:00 | I have used ZA for about 8 years, ZA Pro for about 3 of those years, ZA Security Suite for the last 3. Never had an issue I couldn't easily resolve. Never had a nasty get through... The only thing I don't like about ZA SS is the time it adds to fire up Outlook 2003, but then I don't shut Outlook down very often, so only a minor issue... |

| 713922 | 2008-10-23 01:01:00 | Personally I'd use Comodo - the main reason people dont like it is because they cant be bothered learning how to use it, it will do almost every thing you want if you take the time to read the instructions. Example - some people have problems with a LAN working - WHY? because they have not told the firewall to allow the whole range through that the LAN uses - even ZA you have to set the LAN. When I install it, I select Firewall only - and that eliminates most of the pop ups people get and cant understand. This is NOT a dig tweak'e Comodo is a royal pain in the butt. it actually doesn't have application control on the firewall side but rather trusting the files overall, ie you give it permission to install and run instead of giving permission to access the net The way the above was written - Thats actually incorrect - if you click on the Firewall Icon up top, the window changes- you can select "define a New Blocked Application", if you navigate to the programs exe file and select it, the Program will run on the PC, but when it wants internet access it will be blocked. General Observation - When people want a program of some kind but if it doesn't do what they want instantly they cant be bothered reading on how to use the product - then complain its useless. The old saying - "If all else fails read the instructions" comes to mind :D |

And most people aren't techs, they are home users...........its enough getting them to have all this stuff in the first place, most of them moan if they have to do things with it. And I've never set a LAN in Za unless you mean when it first installs it finds the network and notes thats the one to use. |
