| 713127 | 2008-10-18 15:01:00 | A c/p from a site to which I subscribe: Barack Obama has become the first presidential candidate to buy billboard space in the virtual landscape of video games Players of the driving game "Burnout: Paradise" were caught by surprise by the candidate's visage beaming down from a roadside ad reminding them that the polls are now open for early voting and directing them to VoteForChange . com The signs are just part of a buy that involves nine Xbox 360 titles from Electronic Arts and takes advantage of relatively new technology that allows advertisements to be dynamically inserted into Net-connected games . Based on the games chosen the ad blitz is apparently aimed at prying reckless drivers and sports fans age 18-34 off the couch long enough to get down to the polls . What's more, the technology allows the ads to be targeted specifically to the 10 states that allow early voting, including battlegrounds like Ohio and Florida . "These ads will help us expand the reach of VoteforChange . com, so that more people can use this easy tool to find their early vote location and make sure their voice is heard," said Obama spokesman Nick Shapiro . The cost of the buy was not disclosed . The McCain campaign however hit a speed bump in its efforts to reach a young online audience through videos posted to YouTube . A number of those videos have included snippets of news broadcasts and other copyrighted material and, under YouTube policy, were taken down after rights holders filed complaints under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act . The McCain camp, arguing that the videos constituted fair use, said the procedures for appealing such removals was too lengthy to be of use in a fast-moving campaign and asked that officially sanctioned videos from candidates be given an immediate vetting for infringement YouTube politely declined . . . noting that "there is a lot of other content on our global site that our users around the world find to be equally important" and refusing to create a special exception . YouTube response: identified the real problem as the DMCA itself, which lends itself to unwarranted infringement claims . "You and our other content uploaders can play a critical role in helping us to address this difficult problem," the video site told the McCain folks . "You can file counter-notifications . You can seek retractions of abusive takedown notices . You can hold abusive claimants publicly accountable for their actions by publicizing their actions . " That darn DMCA -- Sen . McCain may recall casting a yes vote when it passed the Senate unanimously 10 years ago . |
