Bantu said: "It is time the Treaty died (along with the people that originally signed it) and we all work together as New Zealanders." (my brackets) He didn't say the Treaty should die because those who originally signed it have died. Therefore to raise the Geneva Covention is meaningless in this context. Metla has it right. The definitive Treaty has to be the original English version as it was drawn up by the English and then translated as best as could be done at that time and in the time available into written Maori. Maori only had a rather poorly written language at that time because the English had only fairly recently taught some of them. Any translated into Maori version is therefore suspect, as shown by various and conficting interpretations and attempts to rewrite history. Being cynical, it was all a big con trick by the English anyway, to buy time until their numbers had built up to a level where they could take on the Maori if needs be, grab land, and throw the Treaty in the dustbin. |

Wish we had that kind of insight, peculiar to socialists. |

| 714097 | 2008-10-24 05:37:00 | I have been a supervisor in a Kiwi Fruit packhouse for a few years. I was dreading the arrival of some people from Vanuatu, being used to Kiwis, Asians and Europeans, due to possible Language problems etc, work ethic. But they were very nice people, friendly but limited English or French. Some were good workers, some were very slow, but they tried. They are more sophisticated than we may think. But you cannot beat Asian workers not because of their small hands, but because they are keen to work, they work hard and they want to work. They complain if you say we are finishing early what about our pay ! Kiwi's etc say great ! lets go home ! So Lockwood needed to explain better that he was passing on what packhouses were saying to him. And the media should stop reporting reactions to anything before they have properly reported the item in the first place ! (ie ask Keith Locke what he thinks the next day, not 5 minutes after !) |
