2008-10-23 01:52:00 | Firewall only is a bit of a cheat. And most people aren't techs, they are home users...........its enough getting them to have all this stuff in the first place, most of them moan if they have to do things with it. And I've never set a LAN in Za unless you mean when it first installs it finds the network and notes thats the one to use. Exactly - cant be bothered reading any instructions and want someone to hold their hand - then people complain that infections get through if the defense is set to low, or complain that its to hard. You can give simple instructions and still some people dont want to listen. Regarding ZA and a LAN - had it many times the other PC's / Devices on the LAN would not be seen until the LAN's IP range from the router was entered, the PC with ZA would work fine as a stand alone. Some modern programs make people lazy and they forget they have a brain and are capable of learning new things. Off Topic but a classic example - had a customer on Monday said the printer wouldn't work - I asked while on the phone was it plugged in and switched on she assured me it was - got there and the damn power lead was unplugged and sitting on the floor in front of the printer, she said she had to unplug everything to clean the table - go figure :waughh:

2008-10-23 03:26:00 | Personally I'd use Comodo - the main reason people dont like it is because they cant be bothered learning how to use it, it will do almost every thing you want if you take the time to read the instructions. Example - some people have problems with a LAN working - WHY? because they have not told the firewall to allow the whole range through that the LAN uses - even ZA you have to set the LAN. When I install it, I select Firewall only - and that eliminates most of the pop ups people get and cant understand. This is NOT a dig tweak'e The way the above was written - Thats actually incorrect - if you click on the Firewall Icon up top, the window changes- you can select "define a New Blocked Application", if you navigate to the programs exe file and select it, the Program will run on the PC, but when it wants internet access it will be blocked. General Observation - When people want a program of some kind but if it doesn't do what they want instantly they cant be bothered reading on how to use the product - then complain its useless. The old saying - "If all else fails read the instructions" comes to mind :D dig away ;) i've tried comodo a few times in various forms over the years and its pissed me off every time. i might be a little bit out as its been a while since i've used it but imho the approach it used was not very good for joe blogs let alone a newbie. if i remember right the main problem i had was it automatically let through programs it regarded as safe even tho i want them blocked. i want to block safe programs as well as bad without having to go through manually select them all, i don't even like it when ZA does that. comodo just seamed to be a system protection program rather than an application control firewall. just different ways of dealing with the problem. trouble is to get get outbound to work you have to let it deal with everything on the pc rather than just what connects to the net. as far as lan with ZA, ZA should auto recognise the lan. i havn't had a problem with any. no adjustment needed. tho i've had a few with DNS quirks that required adding dns servers to the list but i think MS has fixed that.

2008-10-23 04:33:00 | I hated the older versions of Comodo, but the newer one is not hard to configure. As for ZA - lately I have seen so many Home users do something with warning that they naturally cant remember doing  stuff up the internet or LAN connections, and even after checking everything and it looks like it should work it doesn't, remove the program and every thing works perfectly. Personally I dont use either - I use Esets Smart security, and recommend it to - easy to configure, and the last time I had a pop up was errrrrrrrr a few weeks back when someone tried to hack in - stopped it dead. At the end of the day - most firewalls can be configured to do what you want - simply have to learn how to use the program - if a person is to lazy to learn, whos fault is that. One question i want to block safe programs as well as bad without having to go through manually select them all, i don't even like it when ZA does that. Thats fair enough comment BUT how is a program to know what the operator considers safe and whats not safe, one program thats safe for one person may not be considered safe to another ?? All firewalls have good and bad points - up to the individual to decide what they want.

2008-10-23 04:59:00 | . . . . if a person is to lazy to learn, whos fault is that . . . . . . exactly ! ! ! . . . Thats fair enough comment BUT how is a program to know what the operator considers safe and whats not safe, one program thats safe for one person may not be considered safe to another ?? . . . . . . . . . . it asks the operator . no program knows what the operate want thats why they ask . ZAfree is one the easiest around . sure there is better but most users can't use them fully and often let everything through . i just want to be informed when a program access the net and a simple deny/allow to control its use, not get promoted when every single program and file does something on the pc . at the end of the day security is only as good or bad as the user wants it to be .

2008-10-23 05:25:00 | ^^^^^^ all true - sometimes you get caught between a rock and a hard place - to many questions to a average user and they get confused, but a lot simply click "allow" even though they have no idea as to what they are allowing, good or bad - some of the prompts are confusing as well with any program. | wainuitech (129) | |

Most individuals I meet can't decide which side of the bed to get out of, never mind what the PC should or shouldn't be running....... |

Most individuals I meet can't decide which side of the bed to get out of, never mind what the PC should or shouldn't be running....... What did I charge her ?? = Nothing, shes only about 5 minutes drive away !! - While there she made an appointment for next Thursday to give her whole PC a complete "Going Over" - so that will be a service call - BUT she always calls when she has a problem and always offers to pay even for phone help (which I refuse to charge) - BUT always makes a wicked choc cake or biscuits for me on each visit :drool Not always about money, good customer relations pay off sometimes, as her friend that was there has made an appointment as well. Last comment you made Pctek --- OH so true;) |

2008-10-23 08:07:00 | Comodo does not work with the Atheros NIC on new Asus mobo's well not with mine at least and is well documented on the Asus forum. But ZA works with it fine. I was running comodo until I rebuilt my machine and found I couldn't use it anymore so switched to ZA but then thanks to the mag I have eset free for a year now | gary67 (56) | |
2008-10-25 03:41:00 | I'm prolly one the aforementioned idiots who doesn't like a lot of tweaking and tuning and toast warnings etc . . . . . . I run the XP firewall, keep up-to-date on SP's and such and hide behind a Linksys Router . I get a hit once in a while . . . but all so far isn't insurmountable . I like WOT and AVG-Free with XP Firewall . . . and occasionally run CCleaner, and a full scan with both XP and AVG . For a while I fought with using those others . . and just gave up in despair as the info was a lot like NZ-Speak to me and I found I spent more time fixin' than usin' .

2008-10-26 23:54:00 | I have a very new Vista PC which had a trial version of Norton installed. I had to uninstall this (because there was no way to disable it) to set up a piece of software, so downloaded and installed Comodo. What a hassle! I was lucky if I got 10 minutes on the net before the PC froze (and couldn't download anything without it freezing). So I have installed PC Tools free firewall and everything has worked perfectly for the last 2 weeks. Go figure!
