2008-10-17 19:17:00 | Hi all, Am looking to get some DVDs for SWMBO from Amazon US (She's a Mary-Kate & Ashley fan), so spending $40.95 to get about 8-9 DVDs makes sense, even with todays exchange rates. Unfortunately its going to cost another $90-ish for shipping :( So I see the Ad which says "Free / Cheap shipping as part of Amazon Prime", but that didnt work out. So I check the rates, and it looked to me like it should have only been $4.99 or something for the whole lot. Logged a support ticket and I get a response saying they have no idea what Im on about, even after pointing them to the support page, nor do they know what shipping *should* cost (idiots, how unhelpful). Surely there's gotta be a better way? Perhaps some "intermediary" company in the US which I can get it shipped to, and have them re-send it to me? A while ago I had a workmate import some huge massive freakin servers from Taiwan, other stuff from Switzerland, all cost around $10 per-KG for shipping if I remember rightly. Any recommendations on how I can get some DVDs without paying over double their value in shipping? Dont really mind if its slow postage... Thanks Chill.

2008-10-17 19:38:00 | The going rate from US to here is as you have found... I am waiting for delivery of a single DVD from Fine Woodworking, USA, - cost about US$20 and postage and packing = US$13. Last year it was about US$9. | Scouse (83) | |

2008-10-17 19:53:00 | Wot gary67 said. I recently bought a replacement battery for my laptop from Fujitsu Amerika rather than Fujitsu NZ or Fujitsu Oz (who both wrongly claimed it was no longer in production). Fujitsu's postage and packaging costs were about equal to the actual cost of the battery. I got it sent to a relative in the USA for very little cost, and he then on-sent it to me at normal postage rates rather than the inflated cost quoted by Fujitsu. It saved a large amount of money in US dollars. I suspect that firms like Amazon make their money out of postage and packaging fees rather than profits on books and DVDs :( Sort of like printer manufacturers discounting hardware and instead making their money out of cartridges.

2008-10-17 21:08:00 | I ordered some 6 x 9 promo prints form an American online shop. The prints were $3 each and shipping was $24! I got them sent to a friend that was staying in the US at the time and all up cost me $5.40 for shipping! | pine-o-cleen (2955) | |
2008-10-17 21:20:00 | According to this page www.amazon.com no way it should cost $90, are they charging you per item? $90 NZ is about right for 9 items. Here is the equation we use to calculate the total shipping cost: (Highest Applicable Per-Shipment Cost) + (Number of Items x Per-Item Cost) = Total Shipping Fee

2008-10-17 21:42:00 | Try a local record shop who import DVDs/CDs. I have a local one here who imports bulk DVDs/CDs from the states once a month. They buy them at a wholesale rate and can get them cheaper than what I can even with there mark up on. :)

2008-10-17 23:08:00 | The packing and postage price seems cumulative, and having bought from both amazon.com and amazon.co.uk I have found their rates not to be that unreasonable - just got 4 (DVDs and CDs) items from UK and post and packing was 8Pds. Suggest you go right through the order on Amazon and kill it before final confirmation if the price is unacceptable. Remember Amazon orders shipped overseas don't incur US State taxes or from UK VAT @17 1/2%
