830058 2009-11-14 06:25:00 Our new house has only two phone jacks, and neither is situated conveniently for connection of a computer into a standard modem, so I have had to go wireless.
My broadband wireless modem/router is a Netgear DG834D, and my system worked well with a linksys USB WUSB54GC Adaptor.
the motherboard on my computer began to show its age and I have just upgraded to an ASUS P5Q -E- Wifi Board with an Intel 8400 3GB Dual core processor.

The problem is that there appears to be compatibility issues with the ASUS WiFi system and the Netgear modem router - The techie who did the upgrade for me tested the system with a Linksys Modem/Router and it all worked fine - Get it home and it is another story - the system will not pick-up a valid IP address when trying to use the built in Wifi. I have had to go back to using the Linksys USb adaptor to get an internet connection.

Any ideas as how to get round this apparent incompatability.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

830059 2009-11-14 08:25:00 Could be a range problem - the USB may have a better range.

I see you are in Brisbane.

I was there a week back, and my wireless laptop would not detect the suggested wireless when in our apartment and that was on the 6th floor - when going outside the room, it suddenly detected another 8-10 wireless connections.

Can you move the PC / or router closer to one another,to test if being closer brings up the connection.

830060 2009-11-14 14:56:00 The Computer is within less than 2 metres of the router - ie in the next room just through the wall. KenESmith (6287)

830062 2009-11-15 09:01:00 I very much doubt that there is an incompatibility. There has to be a setting wrong - e.g. a static IP address on your WiFi adapter that is incompatible with the settings on the DG834. johnd (85)

I would still check it, even to eliminate the possible problem .

The example I gave about the wireless connections was from inside the room to outside on the Balcony - about 1 -2 mtrs only difference was the wall .

My own Wireless in the lounge (one of the access points), we have a glass sliding door between the two lounges, if I close the door the range drops from five bars down to 1, at 1 the laptop often wont connect to the IP address if its dropped .

What is the signal strength from the Netgear router with the onboard wireless ?
