Shows how much our justice system values that girls life, 18 grand at 125 dollars a week.

And how the country allows people to be killers.

I'm revolted and sickened, and this is just another case in a long list. Killing people with your car in NZ is almost condoned.

Shame on the driver, and shame on the judge, You failed. Burn them both.

Best they continue witting out tickets for loud pipes on motorcycles, that will fix it....

715357 2008-10-28 07:34:00 Yeah, that is pretty disgusting and there is nothing they can do about it. I feel so sad for the family of the girl, and my compassion also extends to the boys family too, knowing that their son has taken a life in such a care less manner.

715358 2008-10-28 07:53:00 I am sickened by this as well.
The biggest problem here is the soft judge. They have shown time and time again they arent responsible enough in sentencing crooks.
The sensible sentencing crowd dont seem to be getting through to the judges.
I would have thought 5 years (no parole) would be a good minimum sentence for vehicular homicide.
Judges in NZ dont value human life enough.
Shame on the killer kid too, but you cant get common sense through their thick heads never have never will. So just jail them when they commit a crime.

715359 2008-10-28 07:54:00 Elect me as prime minister and I swear fags like these get a long jail time. And when I say jail, I mean a REAL jail, not a bloody 3-star hotel. qazwsxokmijn (102)

That sort of thing is bull****, first and foremost.

Vigilantism only arises when the law can't do **** but kick the victim(s) even more.

715362 2008-10-28 09:04:00 So who you going to call?

The Police?...too busy writing traffic tickets, and the crims are quite happy to go to court and get a cuddle from the judge.

Do the right thing and watch your own neighbour hood.

(and yes PJ, I was out and about watching those young guys letting off fireworks and smashing bottles outside your house the other night)

715363 2008-10-28 09:10:00 The judge may have taken into account that any normal 18 year old comitting this sort of stupid act may have learned a great deal, it must be a kick in the guts every morning to wake up and remember what you have done. What he did is inexcusable, but he is not going to be the only 18 year old to be that silly.
$125 a week from apprentice wages is quite a wake-up too.

I have a bit of a problem rationalising "deterent sentences" - someone is to be punished for an unknown act by an unknown person on a date yet to be discovered.
If the deterent works, no crime of this type will occur, so nothing has been deterred.
If it does not work, it was a futile exercise that failed.

Pretty hard to put numbers on that sort of deterrent.

715364 2008-10-28 09:22:00 Age shouldn't be factor, dead is dead no matter if you do it with a hammer or a car. Manslaughter with a car shouldn't get preferential treatment. Metla (12)
715365 2008-10-28 09:35:00 I agree that the victims need support, but will revenge actually help? What are the chances that that guy will kill another person? Isn't the incident itself a far better deterrent than punitive sentencing? People who commit a crime need to have some sort of penalty for behaving recklessly but if we locked people away for stupidity we'd be as bad as the USA.

I understand the victim's family wanting revenge. What I don't get is people not personally connected at all not only failing to think of both sides of the situation but actually exacerbating it. I pity anybody who accidentally kills another person - this sort of thing does as much damage to the perpetrator as it does to the victim.
