714306 2008-10-24 08:10:00 Well, it doesn't look promising for National to win the election. Even if National get 50% of the votes (or 60/61 seats) they won't have enough to rule alone because one seat will have to be the speaker, and seeing as the National party's only possible coalition partner was the Maori party, which they have deeply offended now.

I see another Labour lead govt.

Anyway, who says is has anything to do with the government?

Your are forgetting about the overhang. It is likely this year there could be 124 MPs, due to the way MMP works, so National needs to get over 54% of the vote to get a majority, as most of the smaller parties will go with labour.

714307 2008-10-24 10:07:00 I personally have no argument with the government helping people with genuine misfortune and needs - What I have a deep rooted objection to is elevating welfarism to an acceptable alternate lifestyle to self reliance and working.
Thanks to 9 years of Comrade Helen, welfare dependency in New Zealand has grown whilst the productive sector of the community has shrunk or at best remained static, not to mention the exponential growth of taxes under many guises, the bureaucracy and Government spending.

714308 2008-10-24 17:31:00 NZ has one of the highest ex pat numbers in the world !

I think a lot is due to Labour's policies over the last 9 years, too much nanny state, too much cuddling up to minorities, not enough economic growth. One of the highest interest rates in the world, one of the lowest savings rate in the world.

To make NZ a better place we need to lift our morale somehow. and to lift our population of good production people to about 10 million. The more people we have the more overall activity we will have and the more chance of good opportunities for kiwis to get more and better jobs.

We will have much more chance of this with a National Government.

We also need to get rid of social policies from the Greens eg Sue Bradford !

714310 2008-10-24 18:35:00 Yea, the only reason our unemployment has been lower its because they just remame it or allow the unemployed to get a payout for feeling a little down. rob_on_guitar (4196)
714311 2008-10-24 19:55:00 NB KenESmith "the productive sector of the community has shrunk" due to the Labour government following the failed policies of the new right for the last 25 years, under National it will be even worse. zqwerty (97)
714312 2008-10-24 19:59:00 Let me ask a question that is oh so relevant being an import myself. How many of those who have left for OZ are genuine born and bred Kiwi's? I ask this as no numbers are given and I know so many people who are here waiting for citizenship as it's much easier here before they then move off to OZ with their new Kiwi passports.

I personally know of at least 10 people like this who have already gone and probably another half dozen waiting. So taking that into consideration the actual numbers while still alarming are probably 20-30% less than reality
