830669 2009-11-16 06:14:00 Hi I'm building (well, having built) a new PC, have done a lot of reading and come up with the following configuration. So far as i can tell it seems pretty good and comes to just over $2000 built from Computer Lounge. Any thoughts on the build would be appreciated as it is the first system I have designed, particularly if anything is unneccesary or over the top, if anything is particularly weak, and if everything is compatible.

Thanks in advance :D

830670 2009-11-16 06:27:00 I would like a little more "head room" with the PSU myself, don't even look at anything under 750W but that is as much personal preference as anything.

Think I would also go for 1333 ram not 1600.

Lastly might be worthwhile to check into a ASUS or Gigabye graphics card, as these manufacturers have better reputations.

830671 2009-11-16 06:49:00 Thanks DeSade, I did wonder that about the PSU, especially considering I plan on adding another 5770 in crossfire when I need it.

Why the 1333 ram? the price different isn't huge, if I went for 1600 CL9 that'd only be $20 more than 1333 CL9?

Have heard that about the graphics cards too, was just hoping to save a few dollars there, but i guess you're probably right :D

830672 2009-11-16 06:58:00 I would seriously consider the i5 750. Even at the stock speed, its faster than the AMD phenom II X4 955 @ 3.2 in most benchmarks.

This case: www.computerlounge.co.nz is better imo

Also note that the 5770 is on par with the 4870. But if you want DX11 then go for it or downgrade the PSU to a corsair 520/550W and get the 5850

830673 2009-11-16 07:29:00 Thanks whellington but the i5 750 and 5850 are probably out of my price range, the savings on the PSU won't quite make up the difference :P, two grand is really my upper limit.

Or would it be worthwhile to consider the i5 750, ditch the aftermarket cooler and keep it at stock? That'd work out about even I think, though I'd need to change the motherboard...

Was thinking the 5770 for DX11 as I don't really want to upgrade for a while other than maybe adding another 5770 if I really need it and when they're a bit cheaper.

Ditch the aftermarket cooler, you can still OC to 3.0 with stock but its not recommended

830675 2009-11-16 07:55:00 for 2k you should be able to build an i7 system, the mobo, ram and cpu in my sig cost me about 1200 all up, plus 200 bucks for a psu, get the 4870 at least and your set to go hueybot3000 (3646)
830676 2009-11-16 08:22:00 Except I'm starting from scratch, I couldn't possibly get an i7 system, case, monitor and peripherals for two grand I'm sure. Edd20 (15435)
830677 2009-11-16 08:24:00 This? (www.ifocus.co.nz 3-1600+4GB+CL9.html?osCsid=hvf0dbf1tm356le339h0ok4tq 0)

Leaves you 1200 for the rest

830678 2009-11-16 11:35:00 Or if you get it from ComputerLounge then this (www.computerlounge.co.nz) should be a good start.

You can do a lot with $2k if you're clever. Don't bother with the 5770. If you go 5xxx then go for the 5850 or the 5870, otherwise I'd save my money and go with the 4870.

I'd stay away from Xfire if this is your first build. Good philosophy is get one great card not two ok ones. Xfire and SLI start to make sense when you don't care about budget. 3xGTX295 or 2x4870x2 or something stupid.

What's the comp for? Gaming? Photoshop? Pr0n?
