2008-11-03 09:29:00 | These are the specs for our school notebooks(Toshiba A600e) next year: * Intel® Centrino® Core2 Duo 1.40GHz ULV SU9400 processor to significantly extend battery life. * 12.1 widescreen LED backlit WXGA screen (1280 x 800 resolution) gives you more workspace than a standard screen. This lets you view two documents sideby-side, for instance, or see big chunks of big spreadsheets. Very handy. Saves time too, as youre not constantly moving menus and windows around. * 9.5mm DVD SuperMulti Double/Dual Layer lets you burn∞ to most mainstream disk formats for maximum flexibility in archiving and backup. * Up to 8 hours battery life* with the 5800MAh allows you to keep working all day. (actual 6 hours lol) * Integrated Fingerprint scanner, to logon simply swipe finger across scanner. No more forgetting passwords. * Superior reliability, 3D drop-detector, shock protected design, spill resistant keyboard. * A wide range of ports makes it easy to connect almost any device such as a printer or data projector. Port Replicator (Slim Port Rep III) is available for further expansion. * Wireless capability and exclusive Toshiba ConfigFree® connectivity software make it easy to access the school wireless network or the internet without the need for cables or connection points. * Web Camera integrated 0.3MP Camera for online study discussion. Whadda ya reckon about the specs and the price? Full specs here and images here (skcsnap.edtech.co.nz)

2008-11-03 09:45:00 | You're pre-uni. Don't need laptops. That said, I went to a pretty ghetto school anyway. Any laptops left carelessly would have been whisked away in a heartbeat. Any laptop that can access the net and run the usual office stuff is enough for students.

2008-11-03 09:51:00 | 1.4Ghz... Are you kidding? You'll need the 12 hours battery life just to load windows. I may have missed it, but don't see a price anywhere. I'm assuming it's too much. It always is with these things.

2008-11-03 09:58:00 | The reason they make us pay 2700 bucks for a fast laptop instead of a budget laptop is cause of two main reasons: 1) These laptops are extra expensive because they have many "student safe" features such as moving the HDD in a safe position when it feels movement. And an extra hard shell. Not to mention we have to carry it around, so weight is a problem. This years laptops were better than last years one it terms of portability. 1.4kg plus the 6 hrs battery life means we don't need to carry a charger to school too. 2) Speed. Boot up times and the time it takes to open an application are very important factors. Laptops are supposed to increase "productivity", so if we have to wait 10 minutes just for stupid vista to start-up then its wasting a lot of time during the lesson. Which is also why they make it compulsory that after 3 years you must upgrade your laptop to the latest SNAP model. They also don't won't games on your computer(especially illegal one), as they think it "slows down your computer" That's pretty much it An XPS or MacBook would have been better choices though:p

2008-11-03 10:03:00 | It's a Core 2 Duo. A 1.4GHz C2D would probably be equal to a desktop E6300 or maybe even E6400. And that's overkill for Word and Firefox. Seriously, $2700 for that?? Can't you buy your own laptop, and not a school-approved one?

2008-11-03 10:13:00 | Trust Me-We don't just run Word and FF Don't forget this is Vista here too. I considered it,yes but there are many benefits to buying their SNAP notebook: -3 years warranty -Onsite repair, if notebook stuffs up they'll fix it straight away, whether it be hardware/software -Free amour bag case(much needed for students) -Tougher -I few more but I've forgotten:p I seriously considered buying a non SNAP notebook, but there are a few drawbacks that stopped me: -Pay an extra $200 for school software and being added to domain (MS office enterprise, school software) -No "school proof features" (we're teenager ok?) -No onsite service (biggie for me, cause I seem to have a million problems) They will fix your computer, but they'll charge you LOTS.

2008-11-03 10:16:00 | It's a Core 2 Duo. A 1.4GHz C2D would probably be equal to a desktop E6300 or maybe even E6400. The laptop previous(one I currently have) was a C2D T7200 2.0Ghz It's faster than the a600e processor, right? (I have a bit of doubt cause it says Centrino 2 vPro, and I don't know how to compare that to the C2D:confused:

2008-11-03 10:22:00 | Next year I'll consider buying a non-SNAP notebook if someone is willing to fix my laptop for free and lives near me:p:D The majority of those using non-SNAP laptops are seniors, because they don't need school proof features any more and don't mind carrying brick around all day AND they don't need to bring their laptop to school everyday. Plus they're less "rough" and more "responsible"

2008-11-03 17:33:00 | I would have thought that one of those mini notebooks would be perfect for school?? Cheap, portable, no hard drive crashes if you get one with a SSD drive.
