716628 2008-11-02 08:30:00 My wife and I are looking at getting our motorcycle licenses and it seems we need to do a "Basic handling skills test" to start this off.

I see that there are companies that do half day training and tests. We would be doing this in the Wellington area, and I just want to know if anyone has had any experience with any of these companies? Is this the best way to go, or do we just buy a bike and start riding round empty carparks?

Thoughts?

716629 2008-11-02 08:36:00 Motorcycle training has been tried in the past - it is a waste of time. Devote your efforts to training the rider(s) - a never-ending process. ;) R2x1 (4628)
716630 2008-11-02 09:04:00 Go ask at Kiwibiker.

They will recommend a trainer, and they run a mentor program, so you can go for a few rides with an experienced rider, not to train ya as such, just to watch and ride with, ask any questions.Mentor program kicks in after you have done training with a qualified instructor.

Be aware though that Kiwibiker.co.nz has a massive quota of moronic crap that has to be filtered out.

716631 2008-11-02 09:06:00 Ah, you mean just to get the bit of paper to sit your license?

Ask at the AA, They should give you a name and number, The person at the end of the number will give you a time and place, at that time and place you will need to demonstrate how you can ride a scooter around a cone or 3.

716632 2008-11-02 09:07:00 There are some organisations that will take you through the requirements of the Basic Handling Test and then conduct the test as part of the course. I had no real training before I sat mine but had some years experience on farm bikes etc. The bike was supplied as part of the test.

Head to KiwiBiker - New Biker Section (www.kiwibiker.co.nz) and read up or register and post.

You'll never look back - four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul.

Like Metla says - like most forums, sift or ignore the crap and there's some good info there (or just add to it for ****s and giggles).

716634 2008-11-02 09:54:00 Basic handling skills test Sorry can't resist this - all in fun :D:p Since you are in WGTN area, go to the top of the biggest hill, Brooklyn, Belmont or Wainui Hill, ( lower Hutt side) start at the top and go for it - if she makes it down to the bottom in one piece - she passes. wainuitech (129)
716635 2008-11-02 10:06:00 Weird, I have spent a number of years in Wellington, and have never ventured over the Wainui Hill, Granted those that had a good enough grasp of the English language to escape and assimilate into civilised society haven't exactly made me want to go over and see what those left behind look like. 716636 2008-11-02 18:49:00 Just remember when you are on a motorbike you are an accident waiting to happen. Cars will take you out usualy by pulling out in front of you.
The US Marines have lost more people on motorbikes than killed in Iraq this year.
My advice keep light on, wear hi viz jacket and most important get used to applying both front and rear brake together all the time (except front brake on loose or icy surface)
I have had 3 hospital visits from bike crashes, 2 were cars not seeing me other one I was drunk.
