832337 2009-11-22 01:28:00 Hey there everyone I got a Enermax 420W SLi PSU and my friend was saying how good the amperage was or something. I told him I wanted to run a X2 6000+ (95W) and a HD 5750 requiring one of the two PCI-E 6 Pin adaptors and he said that should run fine on it.

Here are the specs +3.3@30A,+5V@30A,+12V1@20A,+12V2@20A,-12V@0.6A,+ 5VSB@3.0A

I think? it has 2x 20A rails? but what is the 'total amperage'. Thanks heaps

832338 2009-11-22 06:23:00 that card needs at least a 450W psu according to the AMD site.. GameJunkie (72)
832339 2009-11-22 06:53:00 Yea it should be enough whellington (15030)
832340 2009-11-22 06:53:00 Enermax are a great brand but I would get a slightly higher wattage one. pctek (84)

Well, for starters at 420W max rating it can run just over half the current rating for each of those rails, about 56% to be precise. In other words, it can't run all those rails simultaneously at the maximum levels quoted, in fact dividing by two would leave a bare 6% margin. Of course your computer would not load all rails up to that level simultaneously, but if you intend pushing things, for durability go for a 600-650 watt supply.

I'm not well up on computer supplies, but I have considerable experience with switch-mode supplies (of which genre, this is one) and they don't like being pushed to their limits, even with good forced ventilation. Heat is the number one enemy of all electronics.

Cheers

They are refering to the entire system Load (kinda based on a average system), the GPU itself doesnt require 450W like many people think.

And yea agree with above, that 420watt will little doubt work, but it may be strained, so with little overhead if it blows after extended use you risk it taking out other things. Doesnt pay to scrimp on the PSU.

Enermax is a "good" mainstream brand, middle of the pack, but no where near the best.

832344 2009-11-23 19:27:00 I would upgrade the PSU as soon as you can. I'm sure the 420 will run it, but if you're pushing the performance of the machine, it will struggle, and probably die. inphinity (7274)
