831635	2009-11-19 18:15:00	I have just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a pentium 3 Dell computer. Is started of good but then I tried to change the monitor resolution to 800 x 600 and now I cannot start it again. All I can see on my crt monitor is a lot of very narrow lines filling the screen when it opens and I cannot read anything underneath. Can someone tell me how to start the computer again or do I have to reinstall the OS??	mukiduk (1580)
831636	2009-11-19 20:41:00	If you do 'Ctrl-Alt-F1' you should get to a terminal login screen. If not try *-F2 or F3 or F4. Login and edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf to set your required resolution & refresh rate (which sounds like is set higher than your monitor can cope with). There should be some helpful comments in the file, or google for xorg.conf & your video card model to find the correct options to set. Then you need to restart the display manager, probably gdm if you use gnome or kdm for kde. Not sure where Ubuntu keeps it startup scripts for these but google does. Something like sudo /path/to/gdm restart BTW the 'sudo' command at the start of all these gives you SuperUser privileges to do things your normal user is not allowed to.	fred_fish (15241)
