831586 2009-11-21 20:50:00 What is Mike doing these days? That name rings a bell for me too!

Regarding the rotary exchange, I might dig up my camera and head down to MOTAT and see if I can get us some pics.

Sadly Mike passed away in 2001

831587 2009-11-22 03:20:00 I saw one of the last Rotary exchanges in 1970 in the old Central exchange in Wellington, but worked mostly in stepping equipment in Courtney Place and Central 2 installing new step equipment and some cabling.

Back in the 80s I used to organise training tours (induction of new Clerical staff) which took in the old step telex exchange in Thorndon then crossbar at Newtown and then the model exchange in TE Section where they had SPC (NEAX61 S, M and E) Then it was off up to Wright's Hill to look at Microwave towers and then out around Point Halswell to view the Satellite antennae.

The first transistorised Fujitsu equipment being installed in Hamilton.

How did we manage it without a Hard Hat and a Fluro Jacket?:lol:

Looks like the old Fuji carrier gear.

831591 2009-11-22 20:12:00 Looks like the old Fuji carrier gear .

Yes Paul, that was the first of the Fujitsu Carrier Equipment, a whole 600 channels .

What a laugh installing it . Firstly the equipment turned up and nothing else so we looked at it and it appeared it should be installed “This Way Up” so we did . Then nothing, so we requested some Handbooks and Circuits for the darn stuff . By the time they arrived we’d taken a punt on how it went together and wired it up how we thought .

Then the Handbooks arrived to our great relief, only to find everything was in Japanese . Great, however the photos were helpful, except all the people in the photos were dressed like Surgeons .

Oh well, lets see if it works . Ahhh, where’s the test gear, all we’ve got is the old AT&E stuff and nothing fits . Anyway, by this time we are almost back at war with the Japs so Fujitsu send the test gear complete with their own technician .

Well, their Technician nearly passed out when he saw our old gear and realised we’d installed his new beaut gear by guess and by God .

The amazing thing was the stuff worked beautifully right from switch on and hardly an adjustment was needed .

Another little hardship experienced during the installation was that most of my colleagues were ex Second World War veterans and they wanted nothing to do with anything Japanese . The guy in he photo with me, one of natures gentlemen, was ex Air Force in the Pacific and he would have chucked the stuff straight in the Waikato River, which was only a short distance away .

As an aside, from Chill's photos it doesn't look like MDF's have changed in 50 years . :D

831592 2009-11-23 09:18:00 Have to say I bet that was especially chosen. Having been in loads and loads of different exchanges - before privatisation and after I can tell you 99% don't look anything like that.

What they look like is a bomb site with spaghetti wiring and no labelling.
The building aren't maintained either - hence piles of rubble and stuff everywhere.
Their cell sites were the same.
