716975 2008-11-03 19:17:00 But how is it responsible to allow morons and idiots to be allowed partial responsibility for who will govern the country? Bozo (8540)
716976 2008-11-03 19:20:00 Our forbears fought long and hard for Universal suffrage.
Suggest you read up on history before removing peoples rights. Dumb comes in many guises.

We have already had 'Only Landowners' Only Whites' 'Only Males' ad infinitum.

Very true. Heartily agree. Universal suffrage is the only way.

Besides, if spelling and grammar were part of the test, there would be some in this thread alone that would fail.

Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.

Sir Winston Churchill would not agree with you.

716977 2008-11-03 19:20:00 This test has already been done. Those who pass become voters, those who fail are candidates R2x1 (4628)

I was thinking of some more logic tests that are multi-choice.

Questions such as:
1 - Current President of the USA
2 - 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17 - what is the next number?
3 - Current leaders of the National and Labour Parties?
4 - A digital clock reads 02:00. Three and a quarter hours later, it fell upside down. If you see it through a mirror, it should read 51:50.(True/False)
5 - Ralph is four times as old as Frank. In 20 years, Ralph will be twice as old as Frank. How old are Ralph and Frank?

Simple logical and current world affairs questions to determine the intelligence of the to-be-voter.

Who do you think these are?

716980 2008-11-03 19:45:00 This has to be the dumbest thread I've read in a long time.

So you're saying that the elected government should only be representative of a fraction of society?? There's a few words for that kind of government, but democratic isn't one of them Demon Hunter

Like Sue says, you should read up on your history.

No and far from it.
I am saying that the idiots and other intellectual morons in our society (guessing here at around 5-10%) who can't answer a few logical questions have no place in helping decide who our future leaders will be.

716982 2008-11-03 19:56:00 Doubt if it would work - Who's to say someone is Dumb ? maybe they have a learning difficulty - but still can fully understand whats what in the world.

Heres a classic example - I guy I used to know several years ago - has a problem learning to read - Was he "Dumb" ? no bloody way - he has skills that he learnt that many wouldn't even attempt - he drives some of the most dangerous digging machinery and works in an environment that one wrong move could mean falling down banks/hills and getting killed.

When he went for his licenses to drive these machines, he was given a different test to see if he was capable - and flew through no problems - BUT if you gave him those 10 questions I doubt he could read the paper. Yet he is far more knowledgeable than some other people about, and far from dumb / stupid.

Edited: just because someone may have a high IQ, doesn't mean they will make a smart choice.

Those questions where the first things that popped into my mind, but just the general idea of a few questions that actually require some form of intelligence to answer could be implemented in some way that would reach people such as the guy you mentioned.

716984 2008-11-03 20:04:00 What if the bar was raised just above your head demonhunter? Maybe the test is something as simple as determining those that know the difference between their and there should be allowed to vote?

There is already enough apathy about voting at the moment and I would suspect those you propose should not vote probably wont vote anyway.
