716104 2008-10-30 23:04:00 We have 2 cats and 2 dogs.
After preparing a seed bed, I put wire netting over it, and leave it there until the plants are growing through. When the plants are big enough the cats dont dig them up any way.

I usually leave an area in the vege garden for them to use and keep it forked over. They use that and everyone is happy :)

The dogs have to be kept off because cat poo is a big attraction :banana

:)

Its actually legal to kill pet cat's you trap, as long as its done humanely.

On TV a few months back, a guy got annoyed at cats getting into
his small greenhouse, making holes in the plastic sheeting roof etc.
So he set traps & killed them (he admited he was doing this). Many local cats disappeared. Fully legal, nothing the SPCA could do about it. (Many angry local
residents & some death threats thou)

716107 2008-10-30 23:53:00 I wonder about some people here.

Has it occurred to you that its someones pet? You'd be pleased if someone killed your pet because they didn't like what it did?

Cats prefer an easy to dig in area without plants. Any ammonia based solution won't work, the pet deterrent stuff you can get in pet shops does, but rain will wash it away.

They also tend to avoid areas with other cats living there.

So get your own pet, use deterrent solution or keep the garden unattractive - string, shells, whatever you like so they don't like to dig.

Mine don't like areas that have been covered over with fresh lawn clippings, too stinky for them, gets stuck on the paws plus it decomposes nicely enhancing the plants and keeps the weeds under control.

At the moment they are digging among the peas, don't mind that too much as we planted loads.

716108 2008-10-30 23:58:00 I had a thread on a very similar problem a while back:

forums.pcworld.co.nz (forums.pcworld.co.nz)

The product on this site (www.contech-inc.com) works a treat!!

All the chemical remedies failed, but cats don't like the sudden noise or the prospect of getting wet. There is a local online supplier (Christchurch, I think), or if you're in Auckland, Gardening Aids on the corner of Wairau Rd and Tristram Ave is a supplier (as I found out after I had bought online)

The problem is the diseases they bury along with their 'messages': toxoplasmosis (sp?) is pretty nasty and can be transmitted to humans by eating food grown in the same location...

One of our resident medical students should be able to confirm...

That "someone" should look after it then . If a cat comes onto my property it is fair game . I have a high powered slingshot that discourages them quite quickly .

IMHO the only good cat is a dead one, not that I have ever gone that far . They are fine so long as they stay on their owners property .
