| 717821 | 2008-11-08 00:57:00 | Funny you should say that my wife, kids, parents and fellow workers say the same Pinko: 1936, derogatory slang form of pink, used of people whose social or political views "have a tendency toward 'red,' " a metaphor that had existed since at least 1837. a person with mildly leftist political views A person who holds moderately leftist political views; a pink. The active word here is moderate You're getting confused with a red. Which is a commie. Get it? Cause pink is mildly red. So "as pink as you can get" is a really silly statement. |

| 717826 | 2008-11-08 20:44:00 | The root cause is that everyone hasn't been shot at birth. Honestly, I don't know why the sensible sentencing trust hasn't come up with this already. Or/ at the age of 15, let everybody choose two limbs that they want to keep. Nobody's going to do much damage with one arm and one leg. Or/ we realise it's not as bad as we make out, we're much better than most of the world, and we go on with our lives most probably unaffected. |

So, seeing as we only have murder and rape as a weekly event rather then daily we should just accept it? Hows this, When someone has slit your throat and buried their blades deep in your chest, your choking on your blood, and can't breath because your lung was pierced, as they withdraw the blades and stick them both deep into your back while you try to get away, knowing your dieing,This will be your last few minutes or hours,You think to yourself, "Glad we didn't get this **** wiped out" I'll strive for better. |

Good on you. But all I'm saying is although it's despicable, it doesn't happen very often at all. It's been happening forever, and will continue to do so. We can just count ourselves lucky that it happens only very rarely in NZ. If you actually look at research into what reduces these sorts of things, often you'll find that it's not tougher prisons, but actually quite the opposite. Though how the hell that works, I'm not sure. |

| 717830 | 2008-11-08 21:41:00 | The judges are supposed to take care of the punishment side. No, the judges set the punishment. After this, it becomes an administrative matter. There are three branches of government - Legislature, Executive and Judiciary. The Legislature sets the law, the Judiciary interprets it and the Executive carries it out. The Corrections Department is a branch of the Executive. Once the prisoner is handed down to the guards and leaves the courthouse, he/she becomes the responsibility of another branch of government than the judiciary. The root cause is the politicians havent taken care of the judges. The politicians are in a separate branch of government from the Judiciary. Judges are not employees in the normal sense of the word - they are The Queen's Judges and their fealty is to their oath. There are very rigid, clear and strong constitutional measures to stop politicians interfering with the judiciary. |
