716076 2008-10-30 20:58:00 I know the difference between the two.

One you have to use the product by that particular date and the other one is you can use the product after that particular date but it won't be as good.

The question is ...

If there is a Used by date on a vacuumed sealed bacon pack.

Does that date remains valid after the package is opened? Or the Used by date will be substantially shortened and you have to finish all the bacon asap?

716077 2008-10-30 21:03:00 Best Before: When it loses it's tastiness but still edible.

Use By: When it goes rancid/bad/dodgy

716078 2008-10-30 21:22:00 Yes, he said he understood the difference between the two.

Most sealed packages come with a warning such as "Use by this date or within XX days of opening". So no, the date doesn't remain valid.

Yes, rather. unless it's frozen.

716081 2008-10-30 23:55:00 I freeze mine and get it out when required so the dates are rather useless.

I find it keeps once opened at least a week. You can tell when its getting dodgy, the edges get this kind of crisp look with suspicious white bits on it.

I have cut that off, cooked the rest and had no bad effects though.

Also your sense of smell is a good indication, it should smell fresh, any stronger smell and its best to biff it.

716082 2008-10-30 23:59:00 HA.

You people talk like its possible to open a pack of bacon and not eat the entire stack.

I think they're speaking from a theoretical standpoint - I'm with you on this. Damn hard not to finish the pack!

x2

I have sat down and demolished a loaf of white bread and a pack of bacon in a sitting before.

Great food.

716085 2008-10-31 02:45:00 In my opinion use-by dates on bacon are more for the store than the customer (unless the cust just chills their bacon, but who does that?). When I worked at countdown bacon was one of the more interesting areas. One member of staff never bothered to rotate the stock, so we ended up getting packs that were 2 weeks past their date ending up at the front of the shelf. Always check the use-by date on bacon! ubergeek85 (131)
