1446431 2018-02-18 01:49:00 This is not about passwords, as that topic has been done to its death on talkback etc.

This is more about login names and emails etc.

I have been into PCs for years and have ended up with several email addresses (for business and personal use) and several login names and nicknames on various forums.

But more importantly, important sites such as Microsoft, Google and PC World etc.

What is the best practice in todays world.

Eg if you were opening up a new account with MS or Google would you use your real name or a nick name and what is your email, is it based on your real name, or just made up.

I have so many different names, and logins and I am trying to rationalise them.

Thanks

If it's someone I trust (more or less), like say my bank login. Then I use a real one.
MS? Never.

1446433 2018-02-18 04:05:00 Banks -- they dont use a name or email address , they use login Numbers.

Other places, depends on what you are doing, google or Outlook.com -- if you want a "throwaway account" use what ever you want apart from your real name.

If you are using the email address for a business, its VERY unprofessional to use some sort of weird named email address, it looks tacky :yuck:

You are better off using a domain name, looks better and people aren't turned off so easily. Point in FACT-- I've been to quite a few customers places and they say things along the lines of the email and business descriptions and some look like right cowboys.

Who can you trust ? Well depends on how paranoid you are. (and some are really paranoid) ;)

Goggle I wouldn't trust with any important personal details if using an email, anything I have in gmail is NOT business critical. Google know all about you if you have an android device weather you like to admit it or not.

All higher security is Via my own domain name ( if a email is required) or as mentioned, banks use numbers not Email.
It easy as to spoof someone's email email address when you have it, but not quite so easy to have your bank account numbers passed on. Meaning how many times do people forward on emails and there are a long list of others.

One person (customer) I had to get into her email to recover some product keys, couldn't get hold of her on the phone, it was with gmail, guessed the email address and password 1st try.

gmail etc
All the 'good' login/email names have been used/taken by others.
You wont be able to have the email address or login name you really wanted regardless.
You'd need to use something awefull like "DigbyNZ345"

1446438 2018-02-18 22:28:00 What about converting your name to Arabic and Chinese characters for user names? How would a Chinese person login in in their language/characters?. Sometimes I use my old licence plate numbers from years ago. kahawai chaser (3545)

1446440 2018-02-19 00:42:00 The first of our email addresses was set up by my husband and he used his name and initial. That was many years ago. We both have access to it but he seldom uses it now, whereas, I do.
Later, as we both set up other accounts such as gmail and hotmail we had become a bit more savvy.
When I was finally got around to starting a facebook account, or I would have missed so much as younger relatives scattered throughout the globe, I used my own name and a hotmail address. I never used to be paranoid but I've had a couple of situations lately that set alarm bells ringing. Maybe I was just unlucky but 2 in as many months is 2 too many for me.
With Microsoft I use outlook.com.
Google! Who needs Interpol when we have Google? They know all about us and I suspect, then some, we didn't even think of.
