1445671 2018-01-30 00:03:00 Funny really how Bill English and the National Party suddenly acquired a social conscience in the year running up to the election.

This morning Bill was criticising Labour for not going far enough with policies for dealing with child poverty.
Talking about the policies they introduced last May, conveniently forgetting 9 years of denial of the existence of poverty.
LMAO.

1445672 2018-01-30 00:48:00 Define child poverty.
Start there .

If you own a TV or a car, you're not in poverty.
If your parents wont feed you , thats not poverty.

To quote a Nat leader re children going hungry at school with no lunches , some time back
" 2 slices of bread and some slices of cheese "

1445673 2018-01-30 00:52:00 Poverty is living in a rubbish dump, collecting plastic to try & earn a living
Lets get real with definitions

I own a TV. 32" 8 yr old, bought for $500 at the time, no USb or anything on it.
O own a car, 1996 Corolla 202000km on clock. $2500 buy price at the time.

I am currently fairly poor, see my thread about particle board.
We had a bit of a one after another going on for the last 18mnths, appliances, floors, roof, ranchslider.

OK, it will come right, but right now I can't afford to do any shopping for at least 4 weeks.

Ok, we can live off the garden for now, but what? I should sell the TV or car?
I wouldn't get much for the TV< and the car, well it's the only vehicle and we kind of need it.

So general statements like that are stupid.

1445675 2018-01-30 05:52:00 Throwing money at so called poor parents and I use the term parents loosely only gives them more money for church donations, takeaways, fizzy drinks, fines, instant finance interest, chips, dog food, cars, koha, , corned beef, TAB, cigarettes, alcohol, drugs , trips to the islands, sending money to the islands. The kids will still miss out getting enough spent on them. These poor people make poor choices they do one dumb thing after another and never learn. Stupid is forever with these people more money will not help. prefect (6291)

Depends if it's in the "IN" or the "OUT" basket. ;)
Both flavours appear to be in plentiful supply pretty much permanently.

OK. So these Islanders were pretty happy before "We" came, they ate their island food, and lived their "Island life" We introduced them to all the worst of our "Civilization"( food, guns, capitalism, religion, and the inferior nature of their existence, and their "need" to "upgrade", to "measure up!" The usual formula employed by the Great British Empire in all their Colonies.

So driven by an imperative to "Measure Up" and support the "Family" back home, large numbers of islanders come to NZ with little realisation of the closed up nature of the class system in operation.

In addition over the past fifty years or so our commercial strategy has been to pick off the low hanging fruit. Sell crap to the innocent/uninformed.

Without a Puritanical/Capitalist outlook, or a bloody lot of focused hard work, (with an understanding of how the system works) they have no show of making it in NZ

It's a dog eats dog system and if you are a new dog on the block, without much idea of what's going on - best of luck! All the support in the world won't help you, until you get educated and understand the way things are. In the meantime they are very, very, vulnerable, both here and in the Islands

So its our own fault there is so much failure. These people who are so generous and trusting, trying to better themselves, trusting our so called "goodwill."

Yes and before that their main entertainment was to live short lives and kill and eat one another . You cannot just pick out the bits of history you like and ignore all the rest even though it is popular to do so in the current PC climate .
