1485175 2022-03-28 19:42:00 SWMBO says that, with her tablet, she needs to download apps like FB so she can access them. I wondered why she had to do that as all I have to do, on my laptop, is just go to my browser and click on the FB bookmark and I am on their website.

So why does she have to do that? Is a tablet all that different? I thought that both a laptop and a tablet are computers, so why can't she just access FB in the same way as I do?

I'd be interested to know the difference.:thanks

1485176 2022-03-28 21:09:00 The Biggest Difference is most Tablets are Android or Apple based (Ipads), where as a laptop has a full Operating system like Windows or Linux (or IOS for MAC's).

You can get Windows based Tablets but these are more expensive.

Also Not all laptops are touch Screen, where as all Tablets Are.

1485177 2022-03-28 21:20:00 She can. If she goes to FB and logs in, or it resumes from a previous session the experience will be fairly similar to the app, because facebook is what they call a web app. And it knows what a ipad/tablet/phone is.

But native apps tend to work even better on devices, and can then do notifications and a few other features. And are easier for people to get their heads into.

1485178 2022-03-28 22:20:00 And
The facebook etc tablet/phone apps are far easier to use on small 10" , 7" tablet screens , compared to going through the web browser into FB .

You dont have to install the FB etc apps on tablets , its just much easier if you do . :)

Thank you for that, Wainui. I have never had a tablet so I had no idea.

And thank you also to Psycik. I will let her know.:thanks

1485181 2022-03-29 04:41:00 I do have facebook but hate their app so even on my phone I still use the browser version and will not let the app anywhere near my devices gary67 (56)
1485182 2022-03-29 06:09:00 On a tablet using the browser (also on a phone but less useful) you can click the 3 little dots at the top right and select "Desktop Site" from the drop down and get the same page you see on a PC for almost any website. There are some that know it's a tablet and refuse to give you the desktop site but they are rare.
This also lets you use the messenger tab without the BS claim that you have to install the messenger app. Sometimes the mobile version is better though, less adds and a cleaner simpler look a lot of the time. Often optimised for phones which are held vertically though.

Way back with my first smartphone I had a running battle trying to get the facebook app to stop spamming me with notifications and after weeks of continuously turning them off only to have new ones appear I deleted the app and have refused to use it since. It also used to use a lot of battery.
I honestly don't care if it's better now, they had their chance.

Tablets are great for browsing / Email / videos and pictures and that's where they are largely focussed, for real work or anything that requires much typing laptops are much better.
Tablets also tend to have better screens (although smaller), better battery life, and are more portable. Horses for courses. They do overlap in function quite a lot. I have both and my tablet gets a lot more use.
