1485123 2022-03-24 07:52:00 I have a Dell Vostro 1015 laptop which I bought in 2009. It is running Windows 11 Pro perfectly. I installed a SSD. The battery is the original, and has about 10 minutes of life in it which gives ample time to save, and shut down in the event of a power cut. I have been told that old batteries can catch on fire, or short circuit, and that I should remove the battery. I don't want to fit a new battery because it is always plugged in, and would just deteriorate. Question: Leave the old battery in, or remove it? mzee (3324)
1485124 2022-03-24 08:02:00 Just an opinion, with nothing to back it up... unplug it when not in use.

If it only holds 10 mins of power, then it probably wouldn't be able to build up enough heat to start a fire in the event of a battery shorting out... it would chew up all the stored energy before getting to a combustion point (if it is unplugged and not continuing to be fed energy).

old wives tales based on ZERO facts ? :-)

EVERY rechargeable batt is a fire risk. incl your cellphone.
The risk is so low is not worth worrying about .

you actually make old lithium batts safe by discharging them to (near) zero volts .
Lithium batts are more a risk when fully charged, when charging, when overcharged

Too much info ?....
Just remove the dead batt from the laptop .

Like he said. In the even of a power cut 5-10 minutes of battery power there is enough to safely save stuff and close down

1485128 2022-03-25 18:44:00 Or, you could buy a new battery, and stop leaving it plugged in all the time! Agent_24 (57)
1485129 2022-03-25 21:29:00 The Problem With most Dell and some HP Laptop Batteries, you have to buy the genuine battery, the third party ones often wont work, as the laptop throws a hissy fit saying it not genuine and wont charge or in some cases wont even allow the laptop to start. AND being genuine battery's you can bet your boots they wont be cheap.

Got an HP Here, replaced with a Non Genuine due to HP's being WAY to much ( double the price) Worked OK for a short while ( inbuilt Charge) then errors on start not genuine Battery and wont charge, where the original only holds its charge for about 1 hour.

1485130 2022-03-25 21:53:00 wai you got that right!!, lol. Take the HP here off main and that's about it's battery life, 1 hour.

And they want us all to buy electric cars, rofl.
