1486446 2022-05-26 01:32:00 Lets be absolutely honest here nothing much is going to change with gun laws in the Southern states. I dont think the Americans can do much about the shooting just grin and bare it like auto accidents. The right to bare arms is not going to go, how much anyone wrings their hands. Maybe try and limit magazine capacity to say 10 but that wont fly either. In NZ someone could mow down tens of people with a legal 303 jungle carbine 10 shot mag using 5 shot stripper clips. In NZ just like you have to trust the person on the road coming towards you isn't going to commit sideways and crash into on purpose you are going to have hope our gun license holders dont flip out. We have a horrible history in NZ of shooters going amok even with the most draconian gun laws in the world. It makes the news while more are people killed by drunk drivers, NATO standard murder does not make the headlines.
People have to get real and accept life has its risks wether its driving a car, skiing or a shooter flips. If your number is up your number is up.

thats about right.
usa gun law is massively complicated, only 2nd to tax laws.
i do no know if the guns where bought legally or not.
however police had visited the house many times before and his friends had dropped him due to issues.
all the warning signs where there but no one did anything.
that says something about the culture.

over here 50 people die in a once in 40 year event and they go nuts blowing money on things that don't make a difference. yet 50 people die every single year from motorbike accidents and they do stuff all about that.
reality is gun control has nothing to do with saving lives, its all about political ideals.

Generally multiple people aren't killed by someone skiing or driving, whereas in the US mass shootings are a common occurrence.

That's correct. It's a way of life in the US. They moan and wring their hands but no one does anything to strengthen the gun laws and until they do so mass shootings will continue to be a common occurrence.:groan:

thats a good point. i don't recall any stats and frankly mos stats have so much rubbish data in them its almost meaningless.

however i did talk to a guy from africa. he was rather annoyed that western perception of africa is bad due to the warlords, violence in jberg etc.
but the place is huge and its not really any different from any other part of the world.

Really? USA have had 214 deaths from mass shootings so far this year - in the first 5 months!

We had 51 in March 2019. Based on USA being approx 60 times our population they would have, on your reasoning, had less than around 300 in 2019. In the USA there were 434 mass shootings in 2019 resulting in 517 deaths and 1,643 injuries, for a total of 2,160 victims. Compared to the previous year, there were 111 more incidents.

note that you mention "mass shootings". this does not mean anyone actually died. also the definition off "mass shooting" is more than one victim.
where as NZ stats are measured totally differently.
it all depends on who is counting what, and how is that being interpreted.

this highlights what i mentioned about stats being full of rubbish. both sides twist the information around so much that a lot of it is completely meaningless.

the anti-gun spout so much miss-information that the pro-gun counters it with its own miss-information. the media simply uses both to make whatever headline they want.

keep in mind that one of the big causes of USA gun culture was in fact the firearm ban.
this is the problem with firearm laws. if they are done based on emotion from events, they tend to be poorly done and often end up with really bad unintended consequences.
