719750 2008-11-12 06:57:00 A week after the election of the nation's first black president, gun buyers across the country are flocking to gun stores to stock up on assault rifles, handguns and ammunition.

Some say they are worried that the incoming administration of President-elect Barack Obama will attempt to re- impose the ban on assault weapons that expired in 2004. Others fear the loss of their right to own handguns. A few say they are preparing to protect themselves in the event of a race war.

Gun sales have spiked across the country since Obama’s victory November 4. Justice Correspondent Kelli Arena explains why some rifle owners fear Obama will be too strict with gun laws.

There's a lot more. Try Google-ing "Obama+gun sales", without the quote marks.

That took me a few passes to get.

719752 2008-11-12 08:57:00 You buggers are still blardy lucky your constitution specifically allows you own and carry guns with bugger all restrictions.
We dont even have a constitution and have the most draconian guns laws imaginable.
You cant get away with self defence with a shooter here. The licence is pulled straight after you pull the trigger. self defence or not. The jury may aquit you but the cops wont let you have gun licence or the gun back.

So dont panic buy your bang sticks yanks just yet . The new pres has a bit of work sorting the economy out before he takes to your gun laws.

719753 2008-11-12 18:53:00 Why do I have to keep saying this?

Shoot everyone, all the time.

That'll learn you.

I might start the NZ Shoot Everyone party. I'll target all the people that voted for Peter Dunne and Act.

719754 2008-11-12 20:22:00 The US gun laws are the stupidest laws ever, I don't have a problem with people owning a gun for hunting but why do they need assault riffles, canons, rockets etc gary67 (56)

I would have thought it was obvious.

Light switches/TV's don't turn themselves off, and those tabs in beer cans can be a nightmare with stubby inbred fingers.

That, and robbing and killing human beings.

But what's wrong with that? Killing people isn't illegal in the states, it seems it's encouraged. Their own in-house brand of racial cleansing or something.

That's what I heard anyway.

719756 2008-11-12 20:46:00 Ah thanks for the explanation I see it now, ethnic cleansing's fine only if done in America by it's own citizens. Remind me not to go and live there gary67 (56)
719757 2008-11-12 21:22:00 Guns don't kill people, Mcdonalds does. rob_on_guitar (4196)

We did.
And despite the fact that we came to really like Americans (who in general are nothing like their TV image), found it impossible to accept their way of life. Americans deserve better. Their gun laws and attitude to guns is sickening.
We watched unbelievably one night when an American who had shot his son dead, the previous year when he mistook him for an intruder, reckoned he did the right thing. "An American must have the right to defend his property"
Sadly he was on TV as in Seattle the previous night another American had shot and killed his own daughter trying to sneak in late at night.
American is not a free country by our standards. We had to carry a massive amount of identification just to go down the road. Even my 5 year old son had to always carry his Alien card at all times. Even when swimming. It was pointed out to us the card was waterproof and swimming trunks were available with a built in pocket!

719759 2008-11-12 21:39:00 You should have shot them.

Pocketed swimming togs are unAmerican.

Have you noticed how Americans are as sensitive about that sort of stuff (and flags/anthem/national identity/"democracy") as Muslims are about the Quran and images of Mohammad? It's a really odd parallel.

I've known Americans who hate the war, but will defend it to the hilt if you criticize it. Some weird "father knows best" type thing going on there.
