719362 2008-11-11 04:24:00 Apparently Labour spent $40mil 2 wks ago to buy a farm in the Sth Island....for a farm that will have NO ROI....#!@#$@!@

719363 2008-11-11 05:01:00 They bought the defunct unproductive ST James station, it is bordered on all sides by National park or Crown land so not such a dumb deal. It is mostly mountain land anyway. I know I have tramped and climbed in it a few times gary67 (56)

719365 2008-11-11 05:31:00 True, you're usually far better than this.

Give us something to go on.

If they hadn't it would probably be a rant that NZ soil is going into foreign hands, and why didn't the govt do anything to stop it.

719366 2008-11-11 06:59:00 I don't have the full story....apparently gary67 does?..

I just happen to think $40m isn't exactly pocket change, considering the economic climate....

719367 2008-11-11 07:02:00 I would say the level of stupidity would depend on its current market value.

If they used the same negotiation team that brokered the railway buy back then chances are we have just become the proud owners of a raped and broken bit of land not worth buying at any cost.....

719369 2008-11-11 08:09:00 I heard the Government offered them a billion, But they talked them down to a mere 5x current market value. Metla (12)
719370 2008-11-11 08:11:00 78,196 hectares, situated between Nelson Lakes National Park, Lewis Pass National Reserve and the Molesworth Station conservation area.

It is not a small piece of land. The station is probably best known for The St. James Walkway, but as Gary says it a mountain area, the Spenser Mountains the Faerie Queen, alpine passes and valleys, with links to surrounding areas.

Here is what FMC president Rob Mitchell says in the latest FMC magazine:

"St James outstanding landscapes have long attracted trampers, climbers, kayakers, hunting and fishing enthusiasts. FMC members and other recreational groups will be thrilled that the Government has agreed to purchase this high profile property after more than three decades of campaigning"

It disappoints me that so many New Zealanders on this forum are so pig ignorant of their heritage.

719371 2008-11-11 08:16:00 We don't have to share your interests old chap, no matter how disappointed you are. Any idea what its real world value was?, rather then your romantic one or the labour parties taken for a song value....

I like the bit of land out back of my place, I wonder if I hassle the government for 3 decades they will buy it. I promise to walk over it at least once a year and muse about how grand the view is.
