| 719138 | 2008-11-09 22:43:00 | Well NZ has got John Key as Prime Minister - he and his crowd can't be worse than Helengrad and most probably will be better. The point is: Oppositions don't win elections - Governments lose elections - for this to happen the electors have to be fed up with the government plus is a need for a credible opposition with an acceptable policy, that is not extreme and has a resemblance to credibility, with a high possibility that the opposition if elected will implement most of it. Finally all these factors have come together in NZ - its just a bloody shame the country had to endure Clark Cullen et al for 9 years. |

We all know very few poli's survive an election defeat, but it looks like when the going got tough the top 2 just up and resigned. Where is the sense of responsibility to the party, to help them through what is going to be a tough time? Talk about taking the easy option. Good riddance to both of them (esp. cullen). |

If they hadn't left the top jobs then the caucus would have been sharpening the knives to remove them. I'm not sure where you've been living for the last 30 years - maybe overseas or something? But ever since I've taken an interest in NZ politics, every PM that has lost an election has been removed by their caucus very shortly after losing an election. As for Cullen, he was always clear that he had no interest in leading the party in the House. |

They resigned their leadership positions within the Labour Party not from Parliament. They are far more likely to support the new leaders than the "living dead" within National will be loyal to Key when they don't get their preferred Cabinet jobs. |
